| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Singer Donna Loren gained her 15 minutes of stardom after winning a national talent search for the Dr. Pepper girl in 1964 and appearing as a bit player in four beach party movies between 1964 and 1965. While she didn't release much material, the best of it is featured on this 19-song Collectables reissue containing her original Capitol recordings including "Beach Blanket Bingo," "It Only Hurts When I Cry," "Cycle Set," and the Coffin and King composition "Just a Little Girl." While the material conjures up surfing themes that were tied in with those movies, the music is more reminiscent of Lesley Gore's teen anthems. Since so few Donna Loren discs exist, this is a welcome and fun reissue that provides a certain timeless charm. - Al Campbell, All Music Guide |
