    The Buffett Phase

By David  Jan 27, 2005 | 6 out of 6 found this Be As You Are review helpful

Pros: It's not the same old slick country

Cons: It's not the same old Kenny Chesney...

But that's not really a bad thing, unless you just can't live without a KC album that has a catchy tune like Big Star. Be As You Are is all-island-all-the-time, and marks a departure from Kenny's past releases. Although, it should be note...d that he's been moving in this direction, starting with No Shoes. He went further with When the Sun Goes Down, and I believe this is the culmination. And I like it! My wife's favorite is Somewhere in the Sun; mine is Guitars, Tiki Bars (cause I would love to toss my cell phone and Blackberry.) I think we agree our least favorite is Key Lime Pie. My theory, now that he's rested and gotten this out of his system, is that his next album will return to "his" sound, i.e. Don't Happen Twice, Young, etc. Or maybe he'll take it in a totally new direction and do a Willie-and-Waylon-style Outlaw album. (Which I think, after hearing him do Luckenbach with Kid Rock, would be awesome!) So end result: buy the album and enjoy it for what it is, Kenny's vacation on the islands. Read more Less

Carribean/Country Life Fits Him With Grace

By Cassandra  Feb 23, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this Be As You Are review helpful

Pros: It's let's you see his real side without lettin' out all of his secrets. Not every artist can do that.

Cons: I can't think of one. The album is a perfect mixture of Carribean/Country that let's you see his real loves in life.

Country life fits him. Carribean life obviously fits him. On-the-road life fits him and he lives it all with a touch of grace. He's always classy and graceful with all of his music. Ya did GREAT on this one like many other album's that you...9;ve done. PERFECT! }it's just perfect{ Read more Less

Conventional wisdom dictates that the Carribbean Islands are where you go to relax, not work, but not for Kenny Chesney. The Tennessee native found his muse on the islands, and it changed his life and work. He started his career as a good, if unremarkable, neotraditionalist singer, but he slowly built his own identity as a singer and songwriter, largely due to the time he spent in the islands, a love that he celebrated in his music and interviews. Not since Jimmy Buffett has a musician been so thoroughly identified with the life of a beach bum, but there was a big difference between the two. Buffett happily creates a soundtrack to a neverending party, coasting a combination of good times and easy grooves and while Chesney certainly does indulge in this ingratiatingly lazy vibe, he also finds the islands as a place for introspection, and nowhere is that more evident than on his eighth album, 2005's Be As You Are (Songs from an Old Blue Chair. This is the companion piece to the breezy, b...right modern country of 2004's When The Sun Goes Down, a relaxed, lowkey collection of ballads and easyrolling pop tunes that strikes precisely the right contemplative note, as if it was designed to be played during a picturesque ocean sunset. Which isn't to say that Be As You Are is a confessional album, or even a collection of overly introspective songs. There are autobiographical details threaded throughout the record, particularly on the opener "Old Blue Chair," but the songs are openended, so listeners can identify with the narrator, or they're nice, mellow party tunes like "Key Lime Pie" or slow dance numbers like "Magic." It's a quiet record, but hardly an album that features Chesney alone with his guitar. Be As You Are is as polished and professional as When the Sun Goes Down, yet it's designed for quiet afternoons, not parties on the weekend. To Chesney's credit, he's as appealing on this set of relaxed tunes as he was on its gleaming, ultramodern predecessor, and taken together, they are strong proof that he's one of best singers and songwriters working in contemporary country music in the mid2000s. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Kenny Chesney

Contemporary country star Kenny Chesney didn't have the immediate breakout success that many of his peers enjoyed upon signing with major labels, but gradually built up a significant following via hard work, pop-friendly ballads, and a likable, average-guy persona. Chesney was born in Knoxville, TN, in 1968 and raised in the nearby small town of Luttrell, better-known a... Read more
