Eschewing the 3D format of its console counterparts, Batman: Vengeance for the Game Boy Advance goes the 2D route, offering up four basic types of gameplay through 20 levels of animated series-style action based on the shows appearing on Cartoon Network.

As the Dark Knight himself, players brave a number of side-scrolling combat areas peppered with evil henchmen to punch and kick. In addition, there are ropes to climb, platforms to jump on, obstacles to dodge (such as puffs of steam), and other such trappings of the genre. To aid his cause, Batman is equipped with four different bat gadgets, including Batarangs and a grappling hook.

Levels starring Robin are less combat intensive, forcing players to use their noggins to solve puzzles by moving boxes, finding key cards, opening doors, and maneuvering the Batcrawler. To ward off enemies, Robin has Batarangs at his disposal.

Batman: Vengeance doesn't answer the question "Where does he get those wonderful toys," but it does let players fly the Batplane through several side-scrolling shoot-'em-up stages, firing electrical charges at airborne enemies while trying not to crash into buildings. Additionally, players can drive the Batmobile down highways during overhead-view levels that are fueled by combat racing and the objective of beating the clock.

At certain points during the game, players will encounter friendly faces from the Batman universe, including Batgirl, Nightwing, and Alfred the butler. Not-so-friendly faces include Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Mr. Freeze. Apparently, the Joker has disappeared and a variety of villains have stepped in to take his place.

Supplementing the action sequences are full-motion cinematic cut-scenes and a "3D slideshow." ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide

    Nice look. Frustrating gameplay.

Being a long-time fan of both Batman and side-scrolling games, I thought that it would obvious that I'd enjoy this game. The slideshow style visuals, used to tell the story, are beautiful. The actual in-game graphics are nice too, but the game elemen...ts could have been designed to be a bit bigger. On certain stages, enemies and other hazzards can be difficult to see.The most frustrating aspect of this game, however is the way Batman reacts to his environment. The edge detection seems to be off slightly, causing Batman to plummet to his death more often than he should. This wouldn't bother me so much if the gameplay didn't rely so heavily on planning precice jumps from platform to platform, all while avoiding enemies and other hazards. If you think you are the kind of person who can look past the wacky environment physics, the game is fairly rewarding. I just wish the developers took some clues from other games that got it right. Read more Less

    Batman or Spiderman

Spiderman for GBA kicks butt. Batman should hide in a cave. Not so good.
