Don't Be Fooled By Cheap (Catwoman) Imitations

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 18, 2006

Pros: What can I say? Michelle Pfeiffer is the one and only Catwoman (Take a hike, Halle Berry!)

    Cons: Cons? Not enough Catwoman!

My all-time favorite Batman movie and I don't think I need to explain why. Shame on anyone who thinks Halle Berry even had a chance of pulling off her disgraceful Catwoman imitation!

The Best Live Action Interpretation Of B

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 16, 2001

Because this installment fell between "Batman" and "Batman Forever" which in turn gave Warner Bros. Studios more profit to speak of at the box office many dismiss "Batman Returns" as an unfortunate footnote. However "Batman" despite its promise prov...ides yet another vehicle on the big screen for Jack Nicholson to ham himself even if his performance elicits accolades it should be without. "Batman Forever" was deliberate prostitution by its director to attract young children and is far too lightweight as fare for the principal character and its mythos. "Batman Returns" allows Tim Burton to maximize his sensibility which suits the his subject well and does so this time without the distraction that Nicholson was. In addition because Michael Keaton is at ease either as Bruce Wayne or Batman he is therefore with the credibility that he was without in the previous effort. The ominous overtones in "Batman Returns" was inappropriate for those with fond yet inexplicable recollections of Adam West. This then demonstrates that the comic book medium without tamper boasts more sophistication than those who comprise the mainstream are aware of which is why "Batman Returns" is an achievement of sorts. Batman Returns...Intermittently

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 30, 2001

It's more than obvious that director Tim Burton is far more fascinated by his weird menagerie of villains than by Batman himself. In the original "Batman" Jack Nicholson's Joker was given arguably more screen time than Michael Keaton's Batman. In "Bat...man Returns" Keaton shares the screen with not one, but two villains - The Penguin and Catwoman. Add to the mix an evil millionare named Max Schreck(Christopher Walken in top form) and again, Keaton's Batman is squeezed out of his own movie. That Keaton should spend so much time off screen is a crime as his Batman/ Bruce Wayne is a nice bit of acting. He wisely underplays both roles, letting his expressive eyes do much of the work. It helps too that the character is lightened up a bit in "Batman Returns". The script allows Keaton a nice sense of irony that works well as both Bruce Wayne and Batman. God, does this film need it too. Though entertaining, "Batman Returns" is by no means for the meek. Sadism and brutality are everywhere - women are thrown out of skyscraper windows, deformed children are abandoned in sewers - the list goes on and on.Granted, no one expects the camp of the TV series but the mere sight of Danny DeVito's Penguin hacking away at a raw fish, drooling blue goo is enough to give even the most ardent Batman fan unpleasant thoughts. That the actors throw themselves into the precedings is one of "Batman Returns" best features. Besides the gruesome yet sad DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer makes for a perfect Catwoman. Her scenes with Keaton's Batman have genuine spark. In fact, enough spark that the screenplay could have easily left out the Penguin and no one would have cared. So much that given the clumsy way the plot unfolds (Penguin meets Schreck who makes Catwoman who hates Schreck who hates Bruce Wayne who likes Catwoman who hates Batman...and so on) some pruning could have made for a better film. For my tastes, the Batman/Bruce Wayne/Catwoman/Schreck triangle was more interesting than whatever the Penguin had planned up his flipper. When "Batman Returns" works, though it works well. The action sequences are far more fun and exciting than the first ( a battle on the rooftops between Catwoman and Batman featuring both characters ass kicking and flirting is a hoot). And though the film moves in fits and starts, the time Burton takes with his main characters has legitimate payoff in the end, as Catwoman confronts Schreck (who in effect created her by pushing her alter ego out a window) and Batman attempts to intervene. That Burton should challenge his audience with something more ambitious than the usual sequel is to be commended. It would have been all too easy to produce "Batman Kicks Ass" (those would come later) but some restraint would have made for a better movie. At times, the film veers of into bad taste and those moments detract from the very heart of the story: Batman, the outsider who suits up to protect a society to which he doesn't belong. The Bat, the Cat, and the Bird.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 12, 2001

Michael Keaton reprises his role as the caped crusader and does a splendid job of it as usual. Danny DeVito portrays the freaky, sexually deprived Penguin teamed with the sexy, psychopathic feline, Catwoman portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer. Gotham is... more dreary than usual during the winter months which adds to the gothic mood. However, the sets of the city itself look more confined. All in all, it is a very good movie(expect nothing less from Burton) and my favourite of the series. Read more Less

Tim Burton returns, but Batman doesn't !

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 22, 2001

Reviewing this film is like reviewing two films. One is a very well made and enjoyable Tim Burton movie and the other is a misguided Batman movie. The acting is great, the direction is inspired, but it just doesn't feel like watching Batman. The firs...t movie was dark as well, but it was also funny. This film isn't funny, it's just very nasty. Tim Burton is a very talented man, but unfortunetely he's also a very sick man! If it wasn't called Batman, this would be a terrific movie. As it is, it's just a good movie - 3 stars. Read more Less

    Batman Returns

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 21, 2000

This sequel to the highly successful motion picture is ironically dominated by Catwoman with Keaton's Batman overshadowed. The character is played in provocative fashion by Michele Phiefer but lacks an explosive storyline like the first movie. Add o...ne star if you are a "Batfan". Read more Less
