Bastro was led by guitarist/singer David Grubbs (also of Bitch Magnet). Their initial EP, Rode Hard and Put Up Wet (1988), featured only Grubbs and bass player Clark Johnson, but drummer John McEntire (later of Tortoise) was added for the first full-length album, Bastro Diablo Guapo (1989).
