Moose's seventh EP is yet another lovingly rich product from this sadly importonly London moodypop quintet. Coming on the heels of the stellar second LP Honey Bee (even more dense, windswept, romantic, and tuneful as XYZ, and perhaps more upbeat and less resigned as well), this EP pops out equally satisfying. It features a creative remix of Honey Bee's standout track "I Wanted to See You to See if I Wanted You" (second Aside appearance for this song, having also been the lead track on the selfreleased Liquid Makeup EP in 1992). This version is worth owning even if you're already in love with the original mix (quite possible), what with the surprising addition of scrumptious backing female vocals (uncredited; who is this mystery siren??) on the choruses that make the song even more troubling, ala Dolly Mixture's work backing Captain Sensible; as well, the little bits of guitar are brought forward as well, making the track more special. Of the three new tracks, "Following My Own Footst...eps" is splendid, with its unhurried elegance, acoustic command and sympathetic vocals. "Welcome to the Mind of Mr. Breeders" is a brief, forgettable track, and the instrumental "Sexy M.O.R. (Take Your Clothes Off)" is not as suggestive or enigmatic as its alluring title (except for a shadowy overdub like distant thunder), but even these lesser efforts are invigorating in their own way. And the two great tracks are as essential to the soul as a sky full of stars. - Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover, All Music Guide Read more Less

Moose

Not so much underrated as unheard, Moose grew up in Britain's distortion-heavy shoegazing movement of the early '90s but soon shed the fuzzy wash of their compatriots to embrace a clean, acoustic-based style -- inspired by '60s icons Burt Bacharach and Tim Buckley as well as jangle merchants like the Byrds and R.E.M. -- that still relied on the intense guitar effects wh... Read more
