Directed by Shekhar Kapur (ELIZABETH), this is a controversial movie based on the life of Phoolan Devi, India's notorious woman dacoit (bandit), who channeled her rage at her rape and mistreatment into violent action. Imprisoned in 1983 and freed in 1994, she eventually became a prominent politician and was assassinated by relatives of one of her victims. The controversy surrounding the film stems from the real Devi's fury over the way the formative events of her youth are depicted, and also from Kapur's refusal to meet with his subject, all the while proclaiming the "truth" of his narrative. Subjected to considerable scrutiny and potentially flawed, BANDIT QUEEN is nonetheless an excellent film. Music lovers will be fascinated by the score, composed by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the renowned singer.

A poignant film, and yet another example of India's credibility in the film world despite the more commonly exported Bollywood fan fare. This film is nicely shot with rich, beautiful color. In a place such as India where tradition is highly revered, ...change doesn't come quickly, especially in village life. Among them is the treatment of women and the mindset stemming from the caste system. Phoolan Devi became somewhat of a cult hero in India after leading bandits on various massacres of vengance. After being raped she reclaims her honor as a dacoit only to have more men brutally rape her. People, even women, who defy the status quo are given a place of respect amongst a culture that can so tightly adhere to the norms of its forefathers. The film is based on Phoolan's writings while in prison although there are sharp debates between herself and the filmmakers as to what actually happened. Read more Less
