A band by any other name............

    By Mark  Mar 14, 2001

How could any music lover NOT call them "THE BAND"? I remember vividly the first time my ears had this music bestowed on them...1970...ridin' in a friend's '57 Chevy (all six of us), the fragrance of the burning buds...I was blown away, coming back d...own to earth in three second eternities... when the tape changed tracks... "This" was MUSIC! Just music, no psychadelic images, no political message, no desparate attempt to grab my cash, this was MUSIC! Still is! In the thirty plus years since that magical day I have heard a lot of music, but none of it rises any higher than this self titled collection, modestly named "THE BAND". The album is still as strong as it was then, and if it were released "new" today, would no doubt attract the same following of dedicated ears as in the previous millenium. These guys went in an uncharted direction, and ended up, as Clapton said, "where rock music was supposed to go". I can't add any more than that, except to say, be good to your ears, buy it! Your ears will love you for it!!! Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

The Band's second album (The Band) is usually considered their best and most fully realized statement. This 75-minute documentary on the conception and execution of the record may not have many major revelations for those familiar with The Band's history, but it is an accomplished and entertaining overview. Each of the surviving members of the group (Richard Manuel committed suicide in the mid-'80s) is interviewed about the songs and the recording, although Robbie Robertson and Levon Helm get far more screen time than Garth Hudson (whose footage mostly consists of him playing keyboards) and Rick Danko; there are also a few vintage film clips of The Band. Other key figures such as producer John Simon speak as well, and there are comments on the album's significance by Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and critic Greil Marcus, among others. Audiophiles will thrill to the scenes of Simon and Helm separating and analyzing components of certain tracks, as well as Robertson illustrating some co...ncepts on his guitar. As for as interesting trivia, some of the more interesting morsels that might surprise viewers include how the album, for all its rustic nature, was recorded in a former home of Sammy Davis Jr. in the Hollywood Hills; how "Rag Mama Rag" was improbably considered as a possible smash single; details of how Hudson used the clavinet on "Up on Cripple Creek"; and the citation of the Staple Singers as a particularly key influence upon The Band's vocal approach. - Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

The Band

For about six years, from 1968 through 1975, the Band was one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world, their music embraced by critics (and, to a somewhat lesser degree, the public) as seriously as the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Their albums were analyzed and reviewed as intensely as any records by their onetime employer and someti... Read more
