    The Foundation of Reggae!

This is an absolutely brilliant album from the Skatalites. It is scary to think what the original members- like Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, and Roland Alphonso, to name a few - could have produced had they not broken up after only a year. They truly... revolutionized modern music, giving birth to much of Ska and Reggae as we know them today. In "Ball of Fire" the remaining Skatalites reunite to produce a severely undercredited gem of modern music. Track 5, 'Rock Fort Rock' is alone enough to warrant 5 stars. We have solid rhythms, amazing instrumental solos, and extremely complex musical layering. This is why the repeat button was invented! It is no wonder many considered the Skatalites to have been the greatest collaboration of Jamaican musicians ever. Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

Ball of Fire finds a reunited Skatalites reworking their greatest hits, playing long, extended passages that allow the band to demonstrate their substantial instrumental abilities. Fans of the punchy early singles may find this approach a little unsettling, but anyone who gets into the groove will find Ball of Fire to be a delight, a thoroughly respectable comeback from one of ska's greatest groups.
