    Whoa!!! Who needs Meat Loaf??

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 30, 2000

Well, OK, maybe Jim's (or Rory Dodd's on some of the songs) voice does lack the power an bombasity of ML's, but for sheer gut-wrenching emotion, the guy is spot on! A few of the tracks will be already familiar to Meat fans ('Out Of The Frying Pan', ...'Lost Boys & Golden Girls' and 'Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through' all appeared on his multi-million selling album Bat II) but hearing them in their original incarnation makes them all the more great! Stand-out tracks are the title cut, 'Surf's Up' (featuring the utterly amazing vocals of Rory Dodd, who also sang the lead male line in Bonnie Tyler's Steinman penned/produced 'Total Eclipse of The Heart') and 'Left in the Dark' - a song which sees Steinman, backed by a full orchestra in a similar vein to Bat I's 'For Crying Out Loud' taking the role of the victim of a lover's infidelity. And to cap the whole thing off, a four-and-a-half minute Symphonic peice entitled 'The Storm', which was originally coupled with 'Rock And Roll Dreams...' as a free 7" with the original album.Wow!!!Need I say any more?So what if this album was meant to be sung by the Fat Guy? The quality of the songs near enough makes up for his absence!!! Read more Less

    Jim Steinman's Masterpiece album

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 19, 1999

"Bad For Good" was supposed to be Meat Loaf's sequel to "Bat out of Hell" but due to problems with Meat Loaf's voice, Steinman decidied to release this album himself. It was and never will be the sucess of a Meat album because of the vocal limitatio...ns from Steinman but all of the songs are good and some of them are superb such as "Bad For Good" and "Stark Raving Love". The songs "Out of the Frying Pan (and into the fire)" and "Rock and Roll Dreams come Through" would feature on Meat Loaf's 1993 album "Bat out of Hell II" and for any fan of these songs then Steinman's album is a must. The songs have been written to the usual high standard you would expect from Steinman and the the musicians featured on the album are equally well skilled. It is clearly not a Meat Loaf album and the Meat Loaf ring to the songs is not there - but for any fan of the Meat Loaf/Bonnie Tyler/Steinman genre the album is a great investment. Read more Less

    It Grows on you.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 27, 1999

This was to be Meatloaf's second album. Unfortunately, he strained his voice on the "Bat Out of Hell" tour, and couldn't perform. So Jim Steinman belted this one out himself. At first, it sounds rough. Steinman doesn't have Meat's range, and strains ...for some of the highs. But after awhile it kind of grows on you.
