    Uniquely British!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 8, 2002 | 1 out of 1 found this Bad Head Park review helpful

I actually discovered this group in the middle of a summer night back in 1993 when the video for the song "Time to Dream" was played on a dinky little MTV like show on a small independent TV station. Jackie Sheridan's beautifully evocative vocals swe...pt me away and I knew I had to find the album the song was on. When I purchased it, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Fortran 5's music was not vocals only but a mix of vocals, sounds and samples that is strangely hypnotic and very avant-garde. Listening to this album might remind one a little of Brian Eno's music or that of the group Moodswings. Fortran 5 though is definitely a one of a kind group that marches to the beat of a different drum. The music is eccentric but superbly arranged and will make for an interesting listening experience. Other notable tracks include the vocal tracks “Persian Blues” and “Layla”, and the instrumental tracks “Our Little Village”, “A Place of Horror” and the eastern ambiance of “Hook A”. A great album that has my highest recommendation! Chalk up another musical masterpiece for the Brits! Read more Less

    They always look nicely...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 1, 2001

Writing reviews about Fortran 5 goes straight to writing about a nice adventure I had with this album. Unfortunately, it's the only F5's album I've ever had any chances giving it a listen, it was in one of those good secondhands and the guy there was... selling it very, very cheap - probably because neither him nor me knew at the time what kind of a group these people actually are... they formed on the ashes of the group called I Start Counting. 'Bad Head Park' circulates around beautiful electronic pulses varying in their fury throughout the album. From a robotic intro, trying to give a nice overlook for the group was just one typical joke of several ones in a row displayed there (tracks like the cover of Eric Clapton's 'Layla'), putting much effect to the unit as acting 'commercial' giving listeners outstanding notes. At times they'll remind you of 808 State, at times you'll get the picture that old good synthesized music didn't actually fade away. Funny, optimistic, disturbing and furious, 'Bad Head Park' is a nice surprise once you discover it. Read more Less

Just a tad more focused on the music than the shenanigans for their second album, Fortran 5 turn in a solid set of ambient-techno and listening music headed by tracks like "Persian Blues" and "Time to Dream."

Biography

Fortran 5

Recruiting a bevy of oddball-celebrity sidemen and guest vocalists -- sampled or otherwise -- somewhat blurred the backbone of the group, but David Barker and Simon Leonard recorded several albums of inspired ambient-techno as Fortran 5. Indebted to such culprits of British whimsy as Syd Barrett and Monty Python, the duo usually recorded with samplers blazing, the unhol... Read more
