BackTrack Game Boy Advance

This second effort by developer JV Games pays homage to the first-person shooters of early PC days with stalking and shooting done within the confines of hallways and rooms, reminiscent of DOOM and Castle Wolfenstein. Controls are limited to moving and looking left, right, and directly ahead, with no up or down functionality. Operative Jim Track has been sent to a secret Earth base, on the dark side of the moon, that has been taken over by the rogue alien Domingoaniax, who is randomly abducting humans via transportation from Earth and assimilating them into his cyborg army.

As Track, players must fight through a dozen levels filled with assimilated humans, cyborgs, phase ghosts, alien "torchers," and others before confronting Domingoaniax and eventually destroying the base. In true classic FPS style, med-kits, armor, bullets, upgraded weapons, shields, and secret areas are strewn about the levels. Track encounters the occasional dying soldier, who provides directions to switches and terminals, while searching for portal pods (rescuing humans in the process of assimilation and sending them back to Earth), energy stations, and computer terminals.

Multiplayer action always involves four opponents consisting of a combination of humans (via link cable) and computer-controlled 'bots. Single-players can play against three AI 'bots in Death Match or Matrix Assault modes. Other features include two difficulty settings (normal and hard), back-up cartridge saves to two slots, in-game speech from dying soldiers, level maps, and statistics tracking. ~ Michael L.
