    With 1997's "Back from the Dead," Obituary rebounded from a three year hiatus following 1994's rambling "World Demise" with a masterpiece of brutally direct, groove-laden, mid-tempo death metal. It seems there's no end to the masterfully heavy riffs... this band can conjure up. The tunes are catchy and should appeal not only to hardcore death-metal fans but to any fan of heavy music. You owe it to your headbanging self to go out and buy this album now. Highlights: "Rewind" - Opens with insane heaviness, like a punch in the face, and never lets up. Check out the drumming in the middle to end of this track! Almost tribal."Back from the Dead" - Slow and melancholy; I think this is this band's slowest song ever. Its a funeral dirge of the heaviest order."Platonic Disease" - One of the groovingest tracks on the album; opens with possibly THE best riff ever. Read more Less

    Obituary returns after a three-year layoff from the studio just as heavy as ever, and not much different. Back From the Dead is another collection of detuned, heavy riffs backed by powerful drumming, and John Tardy's vocals still sound as if he is in immense pain. Ultimately, though, it's the riffs that matter on an Obituary record, not sweeping stylistic overhauls, and Back From the Dead delivers exactly what longtime listeners are looking for, even if other listeners might be turned off by the lack of dynamic contrasts.
