Pros: versatility
Cons: high maintenance
This is our third vacuum cleaner, following two Hoover uprights: a nearly indestructible classic from the late 1950s and a somewhat less satisfactory circa 1990 "Elite." Our new Bissell is a joy to use, but it does require frequent maintenance for sustained peak performance. If someone in your family has at least a modicum of mechanical aptitude, go for it; if not, consider something simpler and easier to maintain.
The four worst features of our Hoover Elite were: 1) difficult belt changes; 2) poor upholstery tool performance; 3) awkward power switch location for belt-saving "panic stops"; and 4) difficult retrieval of items accidentally sucked into the bag. This Bissell is significantly superior on every count.
To empty the dirt catch tray, first put a clear plastic produce bag, saved from your last grocery trip, over the top, then invert, shake, remove the bag, and tie it closed. The process is no dirtier than ordinary bag changing.
