Pros: A True Departure from Are You Experienced

    Cons: "She's so Fine"

The least accessable of Jimi's Three comercial releases, this album takes a bit more time to grow on you but contains some of his absolute best work. Perhaps it was the influence of the psychadelic movement, perhaps from Jimi's own experience... with mind altering substances, but this album marked a departure from the Rock 'n Roll centric compositions of "Are You Experienced." The good ol' rock feeling is still pervasive in songs like "Spanish Castle Magic" and "You Got me Floatin'" but new songs like "Up From the Skies" and "If 6 Was 9" show Jimi's willingness to explore new ground. Two absolute gems are "Castles Made of Sand" and the deservably famous "Little Wing." With these two songs Jimi shows his Versatility and unquestionable composition ability. Both songs contain very advanced harmonic movement, made even more impressive by Jimi's complete lack of offical musical training. One of the most complete and perfectly balanced of all Jimi's songs is the final track "Bold As Love." This song contains every element of Jimi's musical genius, even captivating lyrics (perhaps Jimi's only weakness) powerful harmonic movement, intricate guitar lines, very good soulful vocals, and the the introduction of the "Phaser" to top it all off. Another essential. Read more Less

When the Experience recorded their second album, they were in the process of solidfying their international stardom. That meant access to more studio time and more sophisicated technology, but not, alas, a great deal of time to write the material. That may be why Axis isn't quite as much of a tour de force as Are You Exerienced?, but it's nevertheless another major effort, showing Hendrix continuing to grow, particularly in his increasing mastery of the studio and more sophisticated lyrics. Soul and RB influences are more prominent here than on his debut, though psychedelic experimentalism ran rampant (to great effect) on "If 6 Was 9." "Spanish Castle Magic," "Up From the Skies," "You Got Me Floatin'," and "Castles Made of Sand" all had funky grooves that gave the spiraling guitars and crunchy rhythm section a much-needed buoyancy. The best song, though, might have been the mellowest: "Little Wing" was Hendrix at his most delicate, and perhaps his most personal. - Richie Unterberger, A...ll Music Guide Read more Less

In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion. His frequent hurricane blasts of ... Read more
