Pros: Dramatic Soul Production And Brilliant Songwriting

Cons: Middle Of The Road Singing

'Awakening' certainly has alot of guest artists, the most noticable of whom is Carlos Santana.'I Don't Want Nobody Else (To Dance With You' was his big hit and it's a hard slamming funky tune, like all the uptempo stuff here a c...lear indication this is a 'drummers' album.'The title track is part of a jazzier suite the encompasses the final third of the album. So balanced between the dance/soul/funk with gospel influences of the first half and the orchestral R&B of the second half 'Awakenings' has the feel more of a great producer and musician then a great vocal talent. But the music is fantastic. Give This CD A Chance

Pros: Some Of The Finest Crafted Pop/R&B Ever Made

Cons: Singing May Not Be Pop Perfect

It's pretty clear listening to 1979's 'Awakenings' that Narada Michael Walden would become a huge name in music in the following decade. His music is pop/R&B that's heavily informed by jazz fusion. The result is one of the greatest ...drummer's albums in the genre."I Don't Want Nobody Else (To Dance With You)" and the frantic "They Want The Feeling" are tremendous examples on the dancable side."Give Your Love A Chance" and the inspiring title song (featuring Carlos Santana doing his thing on guitar) have the same full effect on the quiet storm end.If there could be such a thing as pop-jazz-R&B/fusion Narada would truely be the pioneer.Soft, firey and musically challanging and dramtic all at once. Pro Reviews: Awakening

  • All Music Guide

On Awakening, Narada Michael Walden placed aside the jazz fusion leanings of his early albums in favor of a more radio-friendly sound. The strategy worked, with Walden having his first Top Ten RB single, "I Don't Want Nobody Else (To Dance With You)," which also charted number 47 on the pop charts in early 1979 and Awakening breaking into the RB Top 15. The follow-up single, the mid-tempo groover "Give Your Love a Chance" featured grand arrangements by Patrick Adams. Walden displays his hyperkinetic drumming skills on "They Want the Feeling." Other standouts are "Love Me Only," the beautiful radio-aired album track "Listen to Me," and the tender "Will You Ever Know."
