| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews As a group name for singersongwriter Jon Vesely (who plays and sings just about everything here), Secondhand Serenade is oddly appropriate, since Awake sounds on just about every level like a studious approximation of Dashboard Confessional. Awake isn't necessarily a bad album, but the lack of original inspiration on songs like "Vulnerable" and "Maybe" is pretty startling. (Obviously, even the song titles are secondhand.) Even the firsttime listener should be able to pinpoint exactly at which second Vesely's doubletracked high harmony voice is going to come in, for example, or when the tune will modulate upwards for an extra soupcon of yearning and strain. That said, while Vesely isn't the least bit unique, he does his chosen style well enough, and there's no reason why fans of the sensitiveguywithacoustic end of emo wouldn't at least be curious about Awake. - Stewart Mason, All Music Guide |

Pros: great lyrics, nice voices, good guitar background
Cons: could have one or two songs with a bit more "beat" to them
I think Secondhand Serenade is great! I love their voices and I think their style stands the test of time. They talk about subject matters that apply to everyone. I love the guitar in the background. It accompanies their voices so well and fits in with the romantic "tone" of their songs. I do think they could shake it up a bit with a couple of songs with a bit more beat but overall I think they are wonderful! I ran across them by accident and I am sure glad I did! Fantastic band~
