AWAKE by Josh Groban
, April 28, 2007Reviewer: David H - See all David H's reviewsPros: too many to name
Cons: zero, zilch, nada
This incredible new album shows how diversified and open minded Josh Groban is about his music. He continues to sing each song with amazing clarity and his voice still makes people feel emotions that can not be expressed with words. I love how expressive and artistic he is on Awake. It is a small reflection of how much he has matured. I can't wait for his fourth, fifth, sixth album, and so on and so on to come out!

Pro Reviews: Awake [CD/DVD]
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Longtime fans of Josh Groban should be pleased to know that the vocalist's third studio album Awake features more of the polished, wellcrafted and emotionally grand classical crossover pop he has become known for. In fact, the album is perhaps his most appealing and deviates little from his previous outings. Here we get a mix of original songs some cowritten by Groban that trade between more classical/opera oriented songs sung in Italian and more pop oriented songs in English. Interestingly, the tracks copenned by Groban are some of the most compelling and showcase his knack for a kind of '60s Scott Walker baroque pop meets '80s Diane Warren adultcontemporary vibe. This brings up the only problem with Awake which is that as Groban's music has moved closer and closer to pop the necessity of utilizing Italian becomes increasingly nebulous. Truthfully, barring any awkward translations, most of these songs would sound fine sung in English and generally come off as very good Italian pop songs. So, despite being quite listenable, from a mainstream pop point of view the use of Italian is great for lending the album a sheen of panEuropean classical regality, but in some ways limits the emotional impact of the songs to only those who understand Italian. None of this really matters though to fans of Groban who justifiably respond to his superb technique, silky tone and bedroom eyes. It doesn't hurt either that he's brought along some unexpected guests this time around in the African vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo who appear here on two tracks as well as legendary jazz pianist Herbie Hancock who shows up on the angular and halffunky "Machine". It's also great to hear Groban dig into an adaptation of "Un Giorno Per Noi", Nino Rota's theme to Franco Zeffirelli's classic 1968 film "Romeo and Juliet". The song, as Awake itself, is a grand collision of popculture and coopted classical themes from then and now and perfectly embodies everything that has made Groban so successful. [The "special edition" CD/DVD version of Awake features a bonus DVD documentary of the making of the album as well as two bonus tracks.] - Matt Collar, All Music Guide |

Pros: increasinly varied styles show of josh's rare versatility. great vocal range, original and varied orchestrations.
Cons: josh's voice, as a result of becomeing more trained, has lost a touch of that smothness that one heard on his first album and his vibrato is rapidfire fast on his high notes, and far fewer foreign laguages
i have only heard a few songs so far, and only samples of others i could't wait to write a review, i am enthralled and impressed. josh's voice is as emotive and skilled as ever, and every song i have heard so far is completely different. one cannot classify this album under any genre because every song is of a different genre. from worl (specifically african) music (weeping), his sugnature classical faire (solo por ti), film music ('Un Giorno Per Noi', from romeo and julliette), pop (you are loved), new age rock and roll (machine).....it is his most versatile and ambitious album yet.........................................vocally he sounds a bit less classical and a bit less baritone. he can still hit all the rumbling lows of before but his general tone seems higher. josh's highest notes are slightly strained but to be fair he couldn't hit those notes at all just a few years ago which means his the lesson a week vocal training, even on tour is paying off.he has lost some that molten chocoalte smootheness that made you wanna cry no matter what da heck he was singing he had on his first album and his voice has taken on a slight edge one that hints at great power beneath the voice that he is waiting to be unleashed.whether he sounds better now or then is a matter of taste. (i know my mother is nuts about the new sound)
...
in general, this album will create a good many new grobanites. while the classical buffs who were drawn in by his first album might be a little put off by joshes dallience into new music, there is still something on the album for them and for others josh will open you up to worlds of music you never thought you'd like.
