Electronic music owes everything to Kraftwerk. "Autobahn" is their creative masterpiece and its influence is omnipresent in today's musical scene. As far as electronic music goes, only "Trans-Europe Express" comes close to "Autobahn's" sense of for...eshadowing and cold perfection...A MUST for any music enthusiast Read more Less

    Autobahn

Pros: Exceptional quality from the 70's

Cons: The title track is probably a bit long for those with a short attention span.

I first heard the '45' Autobahn on 208 Radio Luxembourg and liked it. Then discovered the three minute single was really seven times longer on the LP. So I saved my pennies until I could afford it; I wasn't disappointed, it was awesome -e...lectronic music had progressed from the Hammond Organ. I played Autobahn ceaselessly for months and knew every note. Then it got put away and forgotten. A few years laterI gave it to my little sister. Now fast forward about 30 years to when I bought the CD. It was fantastic, every note was as I remembered it to be. Autobahn - buy it and listen to it, but a word of warning; if you are an archetypal lover of more mainstream music with an attention span of around 3 minutes, you had better make proper preparations before tackling the 22 minute title track extravaganza. You may find it a bit too gruelling ;) Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Autobahn

  • All Music Guide

Although Kraftwerk's first three albums were groundbreaking in their own right, Autobahn is where the group's hypnotic electronic pulse genuinely came into its own. The main difference between Autobahn and its predecessors is how it develops an insistent, propulsive pulse that makes the repeated rhythms and riffs of the shimmering electronic keyboards and trancelike guitars all the more hypnotizing. The 22minute title track, in a severely edited form, became an international hit single and remains the peak of the band's achievements it encapsulates the band and why they are important within one track but the rest of the album provides soundscapes equally as intriguing. Within Autobahn, the roots of electrofunk, ambient, and synth pop are all evident it's a pioneering album, even if its electronic trances might not capture the attention of all listeners.

Biography

Kraftwerk

During the mid'70s, Germany's Kraftwerk established the sonic blueprint followed by an extraordinary number of artists in the decades to come. From the British new romantic movement to hiphop to techno, the group's selfdescribed "robot pop" hypnotically minimal, obliquely rhythmic music performed solely via electronic means resonates in virtually every new development... Read more
