    Pros: "The Tide Is High"

Cons: A little too much variety

I hated this record when it was released. After the dance-tinged power pop of "Parallel Lines" and "Eat to the Beat," I didn't get this sprawling experiment in trying to ape various styles of 20th Century American pop. Sure,... "The Tide Is High" sounded great. And it's still one of the all-time great sing-along songs of all time. But the rest?Fast forward 20 years and "Autoamerican" sounds great. "Get Through It" has an anthemic movie soundtrack feel. Debbie Harry makes a great flapper girl in "Here's Looking at You." Yeah, the opening "Europa" is a little self-indulgent. And "Rapture" is a bit of an embarrassment, even if it was Blondie's last number one. But after two decades of horrific white rap desecrating the pop charts, the original rap hit doesn't, in retrospect, sound so bad.All that and "Call Me" as a bonus track. Read more Less

yeah - seeing as how in 1980 - tom was 5, mark was 8, and Scott the old drummer was 1 - yeah i can see how thats a blink 182 album. I believe they call them child prodigies.
    Good work yahoo!!!!!!

  • All Music Guide

The basic Blondie sextet was augmented, or replaced, by numerous session musicians (including lots of uncredited horn and string players) for the group's fifth album, Autoamerican, on which they continued to expand their stylistic range, with greater success, at least on certain tracks, than they had on Eat to the Beat. A cover of Jamaican group the Paragons' "The Tide Is High," released in advance of the album, became a goldselling number one single, as did the rap pastiche "Rapture," but, despite their presence, the album stalled in the lower half of the Top Ten and spent fewer weeks in the charts than either of its predecessors. One reason for that, admittedly, was that Chrysalis Records pulled promotion of the disc in favor of pushing lead singer Debbie Harry's debut solo album, KooKoo, not even bothering to release a third single after scoring two charttopping hits. But then, it's hard to imagine what that third single could have been on an album that leads off with a pretentious ...stringfilled instrumental ("Europa"), and also finds Harry crooning ersatz '20s pop on "Here's Looking at You" and tackling Broadway show music in a cover of "Follow Me" from Camelot. Though more characteristic, the rest of the tracks are weak compositions indifferently executed. Thus Autoamerican was memorable only for its hits, which would be better heard when placed on a hits compilation. - William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Blondie

Blondie was the most commercially successful band to emerge from the muchvaunted punk/new wave movement of the late '70s. The group was formed in New York City in August 1974 by singer Deborah Harry (b. July 1, 1945, Miami), formerly of Wind in the Willows, and guitarist Chris Stein (b. January 5, 1950, Brooklyn) out of the remnants of Harry's previous group, the Stilet... Read more
