    Next classic due now!

T(homas) M(organ) D(olby) R(obertson.)Thomas Dolby.New Wave Iconoclast.Oh, and yeah, classic songsmith.Snap your fingers and they all come running (thank you, Teena Marie.)Thomas Dolby did one thing for popular music: he made synthesizers integral.Jo...an Armatrading, Foreigner, Van Halen, others.I could go on for pages about why The Golden Age Of Wireless is a classic; pop or synth-pop.Dolby understands what matters most. A memorable melody, then how it sounds. Without fail, he delivers melody and sound.A potent combination. As hooky as his songs are, its the shocking combination of the last two songs on Astronauts & Heretics that really catches you offguard and makes you realize what a monster talent TMDR is. Neon Sisters is angry and regretful, while Beauty of a Dream is just that; beautiful and dreamy. You had NO idea Thomas Dolby was capable of this, did you? Read more Less

    Astronauts & Heretics

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 5, 2001

Thom Dolby has always written songs from the quirkier side of rock/pop - witness his top-selling ditty "She blinded me with science". Astronauts & Heretics continues in the same vein but has a more soulful, meaningful edge to it than most of Thom's p...revious albums. Many of the songs appear to have been written about personal experiences rather than curious imaginings which allows them to continue to grow on you after many playings. As with all of Thom's albums, the style of music is extremely varied, influences ranging from cajun to punk to rock. The musicianship, vocals and production are immaculate throughout. If you want an album that offers more than a quick fix, this is the one! Its an album you'll come back to time after time. Read more Less

    The song-style roulette continues...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 6, 2000 | 0 out of 1 found this Astronauts & Heretics review helpful

This album , Astronauts & Heretics , suggests that it might be a good thing Thomas Dolby has done only behind-the-scenes work for the last several years . After a rather pioneering new-wave debut with 1982's Golden Age of Wireless , Dolby seemingly ...wasn't satisfied with the result (despite the fact that his only real success as an artist came from said album) and "experimented" with a different sound with each of his next three . The Flat Earth (1984) was a rather enjoyable jumble of light rock and traditional pop , while Aliens Ate My Buick (1988) was a satisfying fusion of funk and swing (and was outlandishly funny at times) . With Astronauts & Heretics however , Dolby veered not just in a different direction , but seemingly off of the road altogether . Several songs have zydeco underpinnings , while others are more rock-like , with Eddie Van Halen strumming on Eastern Bloc , supposedly a (disappointing) follow-up to Europa and The Pirate Twins from Wireless . Lyrically there are a few nice moments , but the often bland musical composition masks it . Stick to earlier releases , especially The Golden Age of Wireless and Aliens Ate My Buick if you want the definitive Thomas Dolby . Read more Less
