Synopsis: Asi es la vida ... (2000)
Synopis: Arturo Ripstein's contemporary adaptation of the Greek tragedy MEDEA is the first commercially released film from Latin America to be shot on Digital Video. Ripstein's camera roves impatiently through a dark and surreal landscape of dingy corridors and tiny apartments occupied by the self-absorbed characters of this atmospheric drama. An abortionist named Julia (Arcelia Ramirez) spends most of her time in her clausterphobic apartment with her young children. Her husband, Nicolas (Luis Felipe Tovar), abandoned her for a younger woman, Raquel (Francesca Guillen)--the daughter of the powerful and vile slumlord known as Pig (Ernesto Yanez). While Julia plots her revenge on her husband, Nicolas divides his time between the gym, where he trains as a professional boxer, and his girlfriend's apartment, where he lies in bed and thinks about his upcoming wedding to her. jet_li_fan15 - See all jet_li_fan15's reviews Arturo Ripstein's Such Is Life is a very powerful film which showcases a woman being pushed over the point of insanity. Julia (a stunning performance from Arcelia Ramirez) is an abortionist who plots revenge on her boxer husband Nicolas (Luis Felipe Tovar) after he leaves her for another woman. After Nicolas claims that he will be taking her children, Julia swings her plan into action (which unleashes devastating consequences). The direction is far from juvenile and is also unique, the camera is used as if a person is watching all the action which is a good technique for capturing the atmosphere of the movie. The performances are absolutely amazing and commendable in which the actors add flavour to their characters to make their persona's more compelling. Truly, the most powerful foreign film you will ever see with a shocking and unpredictable ending. ...
