The Light Shines For KsE on "As Daylight Dies"

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 24, 2006

Pros: The band has taken their trademark sound and built on it to make a whole new set of songs.

Cons: Some of the songs sound a little like the band's older material.

Call it "Screamo". Call it "Metal-core". whatever designation Killswitch is put into, the band is one that contunies to lead the way for American metal. The band has taken its trademark sound--the crunchy, down-tuned guitars mixed... with the pipes of vocalist Howard Jones and percussive prowess of the drums--and built on it to make another impressive release. The album's title track, and opener show a sign of growth in the band's sound. There is even very little dead air left between the blistering track and the very next, equally impressive track, "This is Absolution". The whole band sounds as brutal and precise with its sound as ever. Jones' vocals switch so well between tearing screams and soaring singing. Drummer Justin Foley shows yet again that he is more than a thrash drummer switching between blast beats and a steady driving force throughout each piece. There are even hints of the band's past in the tracks, "Unbroken" and "My Curse". They almost serve as an example of what KsE would have sounded like on "Alive or Breathing" with Jones on board instead of former vocalist Jesse Leach. "Still Beats Your Name" is another example of the band's rowth on this release. It has those sharp as a knife guitar riffs and precise drums on the back. The remainder of the album is much the same as the band continues to impress with a show of how much the five members have grown together as a unit and the positive impact their growth has had on this new album. Now this is a great Screamo album!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 24, 2006

Pros: Awesome guitar riffs, thought inducing lyrics, passionate vocals, well produced

    Cons: none

I'll say it. I'm a true blue, dyed in the wool, 80's hair metal lover. Give me long hair, a flying V guitar and melodic guitar solo to go with it and I think we have the best music ever created. I didn't get grunge and don't thin...k I like one grunge band at all. Screamo just hasn't done it for me either, but a friend of mine introduced me to War of Ages and I really loved them! Powerful music and engaging, heartfelt lyrics! Killswitch Engage is probably the closest thing to Screamo that I'll enjoy! They can really play their instruments and have some very insightful lyrics. There is a little bit of everything here - some screamo, some old-school thrash, some prog metal like guitar riffs, and some soaring vocals too! If you like War of Ages, I think you'll love this album too! Read more Less

Pro Reviews: As Daylight Dies

  • All Music Guide

Ever since Killswitch Engage lead vocalist Howard Jones began alternating his sung voice with his screamed one, the band's depth and dimension grew exponentially. There's plenty of brutal, pummeling death metal, blastbeats and the like, but there is texture in the attack too. This is a band who has been consistent in their approach, and in delivering the goods, but As Daylight Dies is perhaps their strongest moment so far. The songs are dynamite: check the combination of texture, riffs and melody in "This Is Absolution"; by the time they get to the chorus, it's all over; an anthem. The unbridled chaos of "Unbroken" reveals that the band haven't traveled far from their roots, in fact, they've dug deeper, if that's possible, despite becoming better musicians. "Eye of the Storm" is just over the top. This is the sound of both the Apocalypse and the Second Coming rolled into one. The tight, turn on a dime stops and starts in the verse and the allout roar of the refrains and the guitar brea...k is the stuff of heavy metal legend. If the cynics don't get it by now, they never will. For the rest, this is the album to come into the tent with. Mastodon may have convinced just about everyone with Blood Mountain, but this is a Top Five metal candidate of 2006 for sure. - Thom Jurek, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Killswitch Engage

The foursome that came together and created Killswitch Engage already had strong fan followings. Mike D'Antonio (bass) was formerly the leader and principal songwriter of Overcast, the legendary underground metal group. When Overcast split in 1998, D'Antonio sought for a year to find the right combination of players to fuse hardcore and metal with melody. During the sum... Read more
