    The Art Of Drowning

I got this CD in the summer. It was my first AFI CD, and I was expecting something good, judging by what I read from other people. I could never have imagined that this disc would be as good as it is! Every song is awesome, though morningstar is a li...ttle too mellow for me. Anyway, for the most part, this album is somewhat hard; not too hard to make some soft people dislike, but not too light to lose anyone either. "The Lost Souls" would be my favorite song from this CD, if I had to choose. In fact, not only would be be my favorite from this album, but it would also be my favorite SONG period! not just my favorite AFI song, but my number one favorite of all. I shall write a short review on each song, for those of you who want to know what you're getting.Initiation - An introduction. I don't consider it a song, really. it's just a way to start the cd. It works.. :)The Lost Souls - My favorite song. It's fast and has an amazing chorus. 5/5The Nephilim - Great song. Another fast one. This one gets better the more you listen to it. 4/5Ever and a Day - The First slow song of the CD. Not bad. 4/5Sacrifice Theory - Another fast paced song. One of my favorites. 5/5Of Greetings And Goodbyes - Not as fast as most of the songs, but not slow either. Pretty good... 4.5/5Smile - One of the harder songs on the album. 4.5/5A Story At Three - It sounds slow at first, but speeds up about 45 seconds in, or so. It's alright. The slow paced part in the middle of this song (most AFI songs have a slow part towards the middle) is pretty sweet. 4.5/5Days of the Phoenix - Great! About the same pace as Of Greetings And Goodbyes. Awesome chorus. One of my favorites, after Lost Souls. 5/5Catch A Hot One - Nearly as hard as Smile, but with a much better chorus. Another favorite. :) 5/5Wester - Similar to Lost Souls, kinda. 4.5/56 To 8 - This one's slow. Very similar to Ever and a Day, but a little better, in my opinion. 5/5The Despair Factor - Another favorite. Fast paced, great chorus, like most AFI songs. 5/5Morningstar - Slowest song on the album. A little too soft, but it's alright, I guess. 3.5/5Battled - this is a hidden track. It comes about 7 or 8 minutes after Morningstar. Fast. Hardest song on the CD. It's a lot like old AFI. 4/5. Read more Less

Punk rawkers AFI exude another powerful disposition on their fifth album, The Art of Drowning. Issued on Dexter Holland's Nitro Records, AFI's quick and haughty, spiraling guitar riffs and crashing percussion make for another mishmash for single-fisted anthems for punk revivalists and enigmatic pop kids raging against the machine. Nothing short of Pennywise, D Generation, and Powerman 5000, AFI is rowdy with their old-school-inspired rants like "Ever and a Day" and "Of Greetings and Goodbyes." Frontman Davey Havok casts a rough demeanor, but certainly not anything intimidating because punk rock became friendly after the war of early-'90s grunge. The snarl and sweat are not as fashionable as it once was, but the attitude remains the same.
