i guess i am a journey purist like this other reviewer who hates the "arrival" album. i love steve perry and although steve augeri sounds like him and is a wonderful singer in his own right, it's just not the same. i've seen auger...i twice in concert (number three coming next month) and i agree that in concert he can't hit the same notes that steve perry could on certain songs. i don't know what some of you other reviewers are talking about, but stever augeri definitely DOES NOT have the same range and versatility as steve perry. as far as perry's voice being shot is concerned, i don't know....never heard him live, but i thought trial by fire was a wonderful album and still showed his dominance vocally. i wrote in another review for "the essential journey" that i feel "trial by fire" was perry's best vocal performance as a whole on an album. i know many will disagree with me, but listen to "one more" and then go to "easy to fall" and you should see what i mean. overall, "arrival" was good, i like it it's, eh, ok....the lyrical aspect took a HUGE hit without perry around, but are they a cover band of themselves? no, although it is true about perry making them who they were, without neal or jon, journey wouldn't have been the same. neal is THE BEST guitarist i've ever heard and jon can write and play one mean piano. so journey's core is basically the same....they are still journey since neal was one of the "founding members" Read more Less

I don't care much for the new cd.It's hard to believe that journey would leave Perry out and go ahead with this cover band singer who can't sing perry's high notes.A true fan would know what i am talking about. If they don't know what i am talking abo...ut Faithfully Augeri can't sing high.He sucks. This so-called singer is a temp fix.I say in 3 years Perry will be back.Neal you should have known better when Smitty and Valory was gone on R O R.Now put up with what the people have to say.Journey's concert sales only sell cause of the past music.Arrival sucks ,they are trying to bring back the 80's music and doing that arrival does not do the time warp for me.Maybe they could have brought in Dee Snider cause the next hit is going to be WE'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE IT.Written By Neal Schon ,Jon Cain,M Schon Read more Less

Journey was formed originally as a vehicle for Neal Schon's guitar pyrotechnics, but after five years the band sought out a lead singer to give them mainstream pop appeal, and Steve Perry did that, helping them to a string of seven consecutive multi-platinum albums before the band broke up in 1987. A 1996 reunion put them back in the winners' circle with Trial by Fire, but Perry then bowed out for health reasons, putting Journey in the sticky position of recruiting a new lead singer. (Drummer Steve Smith has also been replaced by Deen Castronovo formerly of Bad English.) They chose a soundalike, Steve Augeri, which suggests that they are more concerned with recreating their hits in concert than in making new music. A group of Journey's vintage always risks sounding like a copy band of itself, and Arrival, the first full-length album with Augeri, realizes that danger. The singer doesn't quite have Perry's smooth, flowing tenor, but he's close enough so that much of the time, especially ...in big arrangements, he can fool you, though at unadorned moments on ballads he sounds different. When he's not singing, the music is even more like Journey, with Schon's soaring leads supported by Jonathan Cain's bright keyboards in typical arena rock arrangements. It's hard to argue that the generalized romantic sentiments that make up the lyrics, here contributed by a variety of people including Augeri and Cain's wife, are any worse than Perry's, but Perry sang his words with more feeling than Augeri does. So, the new Journey turns out to be a half-step back to the old (make that the old, old Journey -- pre-Perry, when Schon ruled). Odds are, that will be a more difficult sell at record stores, though Augeri's similarity to Perry means that the concert revenues shouldn't suffer. - William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Journey

During its initial 14 years of existence (1973-1987), Journey altered its musical approach and its personnel extensively while becoming a top touring and recording band. The only constant factor was guitarist Neal Schon (b. Feb. 27, 1954), a music prodigy who had been a member of Santana in 1971-1972. The original unit, which was named in a contest on KSAN-FM in San Fra... Read more
