Talented Brazilian Girl Makes Good
Pros: Upbeat - Moving - Gotta Dance
Cons: If you don't speak Portuguese, you won't understand some of the lyrics.
Eliane Elias is not a new artist. In fact, she has been in the States honing her craft for the better part of 10 years and has a series of albums that truly define her as the newest, smoky-voiced Brazilian chantruese. But she is so much more than a singer.
"Around the City" is the follow-up to her 2004 "Dreamer" CD and once again, she moves through these songs with grace and a definate flair for the sultry rhythms that bossa nova and samba are known for. Most of her previous work was in the arena of instrumental Brazilian jazz, mixed with covers of previous jazz masters. "Around the City" also captures the familiar with original tunes, but like "Dreamer" the real draw are her amazing pipes. Though her accent may appear strong, it really doesn't detract from the joy of listening to her sing.
