An Epic Debut From an Epic Band

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 10, 2006

    Pros: Revolutionized the Rock genre

    Cons: Mediocre lyrics

Jimi shook the world with this one. In 1967 audiences were reeling from the new sounds of The Who and The Yardbirds and Jimi forced them to expand their minds even further. For those who have heard this album there is little left to be said. It is a ...most unique mix of Rock, Rock 'n Roll, Delta Blues, and Jazz...yes Jazz. Noel Redding acts as little more than a foil for Jimi's virtuosity, but Mitch Mitchell is perhaps one of the most underrated drummers of his day, mixing complex polyrhythms with an extremely solid core. Jimi's guitar abilities were truly something revolutionary, introducing players and listeners to atypical chord progressions, powerful guitar riffs, and impeccable rhythm. His playing is characterized by perfect tone and intonation, lyrical solos, and an uncanny ability to play outside typical guitar scales and modes - something jazz players work endlessly at. A true masterpiece. Read more Less

    Guitar God

All I have to say about this sonic-guitar-blast album is in vain, you'll have to buy it and listen to the most influential guitarist of all time and his pretty-talented bandmates. Mitch (the drummer) gets some credit too, for those crazy tempo-changi...ng drum beats, perfectly following Jimi's Guitar.Noel's (the bassist) work it's of course keeping the main bass line of the song, in order to avoid Jimi, Mitch and himself from drifting to nowhere with the music. • All Music Guide

One of the most stunning debuts in rock history, and one of the definitive albums of the psychedelic era. On Are You Experienced?, Jimi Hendrix synthesized various elements of the cutting edge of 1967 rock into music that sounded both futuristic and rooted in the best traditions of rock, blues, pop, and soul. It was his mindboggling guitar work, of course, that got most of the ink, building upon the experiments of British innovators like Jeff Beck and Pete Townshend to chart new sonic territories in feedback, distortion, and sheer volume. It wouldn't have meant much, however, without his excellent material, whether psychedelic frenzy ("Foxey Lady," "Manic Depression," "Purple Haze"), instrumental freakout jams ("Third Stone From the Sun"), blues ("Red House," "Hey Joe"), or tender, poetic compositions ("The Wind Cries Mary") that demonstrated the breadth of his songwriting talents. Not to be underestimated were the contributions of drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding, who g...ave the music a rhythmic pulse that fused parts of rock and improvised jazz. Many of these songs are among Hendrix's very finest; it may be true that he would continue to develop at a rapid pace throughout the rest of his brief career, but he would never surpass his first LP in terms of consistently high quality. The British and American versions of the album differed substantially when they were initially released in 1967; MCA's 17song CD reissue does everyone a favor by gathering all of the material from the two records in one place, adding a few Bsides from early singles as well. - Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Jimi Hendrix

In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion. His frequent hurricane blasts of ... Read more
