Pros: Amazingly fast processing, Many features, Camcorder/camera, Great video quality, Superb MP3 sound quality

Cons: Pictures should be taken outside, somewhat confusing button interface, not enough accessories

I purchased this on Aug. 12th of 2006, and let me tell you, I have not been dissapointed. After my previous MP3 player stopped working I found myself looking for something a bit more versatile than just being able to play MP3s. I went into CompUSA ex...pecting to just pick up a i-pod video and be done with it until this little beuaty caught my eye. The features on this thing are not easily missed. It comes equipped with some interesting perks that the i-pod just doesn't incorporate into its layout yet. For starters, the Archos Gmini camcorder (as the name implies) has a camcorder. While not being the main point for an MP3 player, it certainly caught my attention. THe quality on the videos may not be hollywood perfect but they are definetly nice enough to make your friends say " Wow! that looks really nice". The digital camera is convinient, but that is about it. You have two options for resolution, 1280X960, or 640X480, either way you are only getting 1.2 mega-pixels. It does however come with a zoom. A 2x optical zoom is built right in, it is a nifty little perk. Even though it is a decent camera, I suggest using it outside where there is more light, as there is an absence of a flash on the device. Battery life is pretty good, maxing out at 11 hours for MP3s and 4 for video, not too bad in my book. Of course it comes with games, but then again what MP3 player doesn't, but it does handle 3-d Fairly well. Out of the box you get a charger, headphones, and a carrying pouch. I know there are a few accessories available on archos' website, they include a FM tuner, carrying cases, and random other extra fun things. With a nice 20 Gigs of space in this little thing, you can take advantage of the Camcorder without having to worry about running out of space. Overall this device is definetly worth the money. Don't hesitate to pick this one up. You won't be dissapointed. Read more Less

    Pros: bundle package

Cons: hard drive freezes and erro

Bought this product in Dec 06 when it was around $200. Not bad for 20GB and the loads of functions. Works well the first three months. Digital camera and Camcorder is not bad. Quality is not the best, but it's useful in a pinch. The MP3 shuffle i...s not a true random shuffle, it shuffles through the same path of MP3. With the 20GB, it stores alot of Video & MP3 and although the screen is not the biggest, can't watch for too long, but is good if you need something to do or need entertainment while waiting in line or on the train. However, in April 07, harddrive started having issue. Read error, can't read from hard drive and the whole thing started freezing up. Called Archos RMA (return) department, told them the problem and they email me the RMA right away, but you have to pay for the shipping. Took over 5 weeks to get the product back. Looks like they upgraded the firmware. Called to just confirm, they did upgrade the firmware and replaced the hard drive. Used the product for less than a month, same issues. Can't read from hard drive, hard drive error, product freezes up. Called them again and they issued an RMA through email and since it's second time with the same issue, they will send me a free ship label so I don't have to pay. That was 5/31/07, it is 6/11/07. Called them at least 5 or 6 times to see where the ship label is, each time, waited at least 1/2 hour and more and they can just keep saying it's coming. Take 72 hours, the person sending the label is not in the office. No help whatsoever, alot of run around, no one seems to know what they are doing. I have been on the phone today since 7:48pm, it is 9:20pm and am still on hold, have not talked to anyone at all. This is the customer service or Archos after you have bought the product. Very dissapointed and very dissatisfied. And with the hard drive breaking twice within 6 months, not sure if it's really worth the hassle. Read more Less

    Archos Gmini 402 Camcorder

This combo device plays music and videos, and doubles as a camcorder and digital camera. The Gmini 402 Camcorder (priced at $290 as of 7/21/06) is a versatile device: Besides playing back digital audio and video from the built-in 20GB hard drive, it can capture still images at a 1.2-megapixel resolution, and it can capture video and record audio from either the internal microphone or a line input. This makes it a jack-of-all-trades, though it also has a good claim to being a master of some. Read more
