A major strand of Egoyan's well braided rope is the refusal of the Turks to admit that they had anything to do with the Armenian Genocide. For some viewers, that's the entire film, and it is enough. A more general theme is the unwillingness of huma...n beings to acknowledge their actions. This is why people get mad and stay mad for hundreds of years. We have trouble imagining that our actions, or those of our forbears, could result in unfortunate consequences. To this end, two characters are carefully placed: one who can't face the notion that her extramarital affair might have triggered her husband's suicide (an unfortunate consequence which has additional unfortunate consequences), and another -- our hero -- too pure in heart to believe he might be a heroin mule. Perhaps there are others in there as well. The Turk suggests they go have a beer and get over it, but it wouldn't really work, would it. And it isn't going to happen anytime soon, is it.
