Apple MacBook 2.0GHZ White Model Review

By Dane  Jul 24, 2006 | 19 out of 21 found this Apple MacBook 2.0 GHz review helpful

Pros: Sleek Degin, Good Battery Life, iSight, Bootcamp (the ability to operate with Windows XP), FrontRow, Apple Remote, Intel Duo Core Processor

Cons: Heat Issues, The Subtle "Whine"

When considering the MacBook you need to consider price and the fact that it is the low end product of the MacBook line (inc. Pro), well not nessesary as we are reviewing the middle 2.0GHZ White MacBook. Features include a nifty 60GB Harddrive (which... you might want to update if you plan on running Bootcamp and loading Windows XP) and a Standard 512MB Ram which may be sufficient to some, but not adequete to others. Anyways, this slim and ultra sexy MacBook boasts the best designed laptop and just like its more pricer cousin, The MacBook Pro, the MacBook contains similiar features such as iSight, Front Row, Apple Remote, IR, Bootcamp, MagSafe and unlike the MacBook Pro, a new savy Keyboard and Glossy 13.3inch Screen. Something that I must mention in that the heat issue found in the PowerBook and the iBook is still apparent, this is because of the new Intel Duo Core Processor, which by the way makes the MacBook work 5x faster than it predessors. The battery is sufficiently long, although Apple claims 6 Hours, your can squeeze 5h15min and on average usage get 3h30min. There is a slight "mooo" from the fans, but rumor has it that this goes away with Firmware Update. With all these features, one wouldn't mind paying $1099,00 (Starting price) for these Mac's. However if your contemplating between MacBook and MacBook Pro, I suggest MacBook as it has most of the features the that Pro boasts. If there was anytime to join the Mac. Family, now would be the time. There are millions of PC users out there to scared to make the jump because of fears of abandoning Windows XP (and all thier dreaded viruses, crashes and problems; might I add) and not join Mac. But Apple has introduced BootCamp (Beta) which can be downloaded and ensures that your MacBook can be booted in both Mac OS and Windows XP, although you are supposed to provide your own copy of Windows XP SP2. Problems (Minor) with BootCamp are that the iSight doesn't work in Windows XP, the Function Keys aren't avaliable, there is not right click and BootCamp requires you to set aside a portion of your Hardrive to use on Windows XP, while it suggests a minimum of 10GB, I recomment 20GB for average users, but from then you should know how much you need. This however causes a concern for you to upgrade your Hardrive to at least 100GB (make it worthwile) and your RAM to 1GB. Trust me you will be thankful down the line. However if you use your MacBook for everyday simple things (emailing, iTunes, Surfing the Web, etc) then the 60GB is sufficient and so is the 512 MB of Ram. Also I might just mention that the MacBook lacks a PC Card (and the MacBook Pro only has the Express Slot) and the ports are limited to two USB, two Firewire, The Superdrive (CD-RW/DVD-RW) is reduced to 4x from 8x on the PowerBook and that there is not internal 56K Modem for DialUp Users or Ethernet Connections. Once again Apple is closing the rift between Pro and low end consumer notebooks. And they have done a good job with it. What are you waiting for, go out and purchase your MacBook today! An amazing buy!

By Tommy  Jul 29, 2006 | 13 out of 13 found this Apple MacBook 2.0 GHz review helpful

Pros: Connectivity to other objects (cameras, camcorders, IPods/MP3 players, etc.), screen clarity, next to no noise when running, OS X Tiger, and all the packaged software.

Cons: The heat when running! AIM has a tendecy to crash or lock-up the system after extended periods of use.

I bought my 2.0 Ghz Macbook (white) about two months ago. As a teacher, I want a machine that can get work acomplished with as a little effort as possible - I want to stay focused on the task/assignment, not the computer itself. I have always been a ...PC user, and could not resist switching to a Mac. The packaged software (iLife) that comes standard is excellent, and worth more than some software I've purchased in the past. I added iWork '06 because it's handy to use in the classroom, but also because it's just an amazing program all together. KeyNote will put Power Point to shame any day of the week! I upgraded my ram to 1 gig, and decided on the 80gb harddrive - both well worth the money. The screen's clarity is amazing, and colors truly pop off the screen. The design, too, is rather eye-catchy - when I take it out with me, I notice people checking it out. The only downfall to the screen: if it's in bright sunlight, it has a tendency to wash out. Further, I love how I can connect anything to my MacBook, and it connects without any issues, and usually without loading any extra software. I spend less time figuring out what the heck is going wrong with my computer now, and more time on creativity. Owning a machine like this truly allows you to see how creative you can be! Plus, after owning a machine like this, you'll want to go get into more things like digital photography, perhaps video, etc. - all because the computer can handle it! Read more Less

Slick Apple MacBook Does Windows Too

Well-designed Intel-based notebook offers good value for the price. The MacBook's unusual in-between size turns out to make a lot of sense: At 12.8 inches wide by 8.9 inches deep by 1.1 inches tall, the 5.2-pound system is trim enough to be travel-friendly, yet it packs a 13.3-inch wide-screen display with plenty of real estate for everything from letterboxed movies to expansive spreadsheets. The screen is Apple's first with a glossy surface. It's a definite plus for movie watching, and I wasn't overly distracted by the reflections I occasionally saw. Read more

    MacBook

What more can I say about the MacBook? I just plain love it. The performance is almost shockingly fast, the screen is a major improvement, and the elegant design nuances from previous Apple notebooks remain intact. I'm impressed at the MacBook's ability to run quietly without generating excessive heat, and at Apple's continued dedication to detail, with even more "nice touches" than ever, such as the MagSafe power adaptor. If you have ever liked any Apple laptop before, you and the MacBook are sure to live happily ever until an even faster model comes out. Read more
