Pros: Ease of swapping out a hard drive!
Cons: Hard drive is Laptop type, costs more?!
Any geek work her salt can use a small putty knife to 'pop' the top off the mini! The laptop drive is simply a regular item, often seen on sale at Newegg, or ComputerGate, or 3btech.
Those are stores I have dealt with, on the internet, who gave me great service, and the best prices at the time, in comparison on pricewatch.com.
Just bought a 160 Gb, 7200 rpm laptop drive with a 3 year warranty, for $69.95. It was on sale at Newegg and arrived in 6 days, with the UPS ground - free shipping!
Also, recommend an increase of RAM, while you're in the machine! The processor speed of 1.83Ghz is getting a bit slow in comparison to some other products that are in the 3Ghz and faster range!
But, this isn't a pathetic Microsoft virus magnet!
Virus immune, malware free, a pleasure to own and use!
It's a MacIntosh, winner of Consumer Reports Fall 2006 listings in three issues (3!) as top product for "out of the box, full Pro suites of Software Applications", Quality of manufacture, and absolute tops for customer service and warranty!
Comparable products from Dell cost about 25% more (Mac Addict and Mac Magazine Reviews), and come with trial ware, nagware, and tons of crapware! Only Macs come with the complete Suites of Pro software useful as soon as a geekgal turns it on!
One very important note: Look at the resale value of Macs, vs. any PC. Macs hold their value and continue to be desirable workstations, years after all the PCs of similar vintage are rusting and leaching toxins into land fills!
Mac is also now GREEN, and has a return policy for ancient components and systems, if you can bear to part with them! I am still using my
three PowerPCs, two iMac DVs (upgraded hard drives, RAM, and OS X), and SelectWriter 360 Printers! Some were 'born' in 1993 and still run without a glitch!
Pros: Small, stylish, sleek, nice software. More below
Cons: Nothing
Recommended: YES!!!!!
I was getting bored of my PC, so I checked out what Apple had to offer, I checked the iMac and noted it was pretty big. I heard that a mini MAC came out. It was love at first site. I jumped out of my seat and bought it at the local Apple Store. MACs live up to their advantage, BYODKM (Bring Your Own Keyboard and Mouse). Still, the Apple wireless keyboard looked very cool so I bought them both. Getting the MAC was a choice I will never regret. It fits perfectly at my desk, and it looks cool. Mac OSX is amazing. There is even a software to move files from your PC to your MAC! It is worth the pay. It will be a computer you will not forget!
Pros: Sleek design. Tiny chassis. Most affordable Mac yet. Built-in Bluetooth and 802.11g wireless available. Quiet, single-fan system.
Cons: Base price ($499) does not include keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, or wireless; RAM and hard drive space are barely adequate. No audio input. Limited internal expansion.
The Mini certainly hits a sweet spot of price against capability. There's a 1.66GHz or 1.83GHz G4-class CPU first featured in top-end plus the option to expand its standard 256MB RAM - which will gradually drive you mad the more apps you have open at once - up to 1GB. The hard drive is a meagre 40GB or 80GB
Pros: small, easy to use, IT'S A MAC!!
Cons: only an 80GB hard drive, can't really upgrade
We bought this mac for our kids and they are really enjoying it!
Sets up easy and really don't have to worry about viruses or anything.
Parental controls are good and I can lock the kids out of anything I don't want them in (ie system files, or other programs I don't want them messing up). I can set up their email to only recieve mail from people in their address book, and I'm the only one who can add or delete that.
Even with a gig of RAM, it still a tiny bit slow (but I'm used to my 2.5 Ghz PowerMac G5 with 2 gigs of RAm!)
Definitely a great deal! Can't really go wrong with a Mac.
