Unbelievable! They should give this guy a Grammy AND his own network weekend jazz program. Just as playing Johnny B Goode is a simplicity for US rock and rollers, Cuban jazz improvisation is easy as pie for this keyboardist extrordinaire. Don't take... my word for it, put on track #9 "Eshun Agwe" and listen to how he is to the mono synth styles (that Chick Corea made famous), as Vladamir Horowitz was to marches by John Phillip Souza (his personal favorite)...playful and excited and inspiring! The voicings under all this excitment and not your run of the mill glib familiararity with cuban music, but a fantastic combination of everything I have heard from the likes of Herbie, Chick, Oscar, McCoy, AND with a little bit of Lyle Mays "expanded" thrown in there too. I know that this quartet rehearsed for over a year on this material before recording it, and it shows. The interplay between bassist Felipe Cabera and drummer Julio Barreto is as if they are physically connected to the same brain. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!A+++ Read more Less

Antiguo is different than most Gonzalo Rubalcaba records. The pianist spends a lot of time exploring synthesizers. Some of the music (particularly "Eshun Agwe") is memorable but at other times the results are merely haunting mood music. Rubalcaba and his longtime quartet (trumpeter Reynaldo Melian, bassist Felipe Cabrera, and drummer Julio Barreto) are joined in spots by the voices of Maridalia Hernandez and Lazaro Ros, percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo, and violinist Dagoberto Gonzalez. The influence of Chick Corea is strong in some of the selections as it is in the sound of Rubalcaba's synthesizers. Not essential but worth a few listens.
