Pro Reviews: Anthologie

  • All Music Guide

A lengthy compilation that ably covers France Gall's '60s prime, L'Anthologie misses far too many crucial songs to qualify as her best collection, but it does include most of her career highlights. Early hits like "Poupée de Cire, Poupée de Son" and "Un Prince Charmant" are wellrepresented, though her midperiod smashes "Les Sucettes" and "Baby Pop" are nowhere to be found. L'Anthologie works best as a way to fill out Gall's discography, with stronger album material like "Tu N'As Pas le Droit" (from 1966's Les Sucettes) and "Toi Que Je Veux" (from 1967's 1968).

Although only a cult figure in most of the rest of the world, indie pop fan... Read more
