    A wonderful, marvelous, fantastic movie!

By Jeff  May 5, 2005 | 45 out of 51 found this Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera (2004) review helpful

Pros: Virtually flawless in every aspect!

    Cons: I can't watch it 24/7!

I absolutely love Andrew Lloyd Webber plays. Evita, Starlight Express, Joseph's, all are exceptional, up there with Camelot, South Pacific, The King & I, Oklahoma!, as the cream of the crop. However his stage rendition of POTO is so far above any...thing else that has ever been done that there are no peers. I have seen it on the stage many times and am still emotionally moved every time I see it. I had HUGE misgivings mixed with great anticipation for the movie version. In the rumor mill for at least a decade I had all but given up hope that it would ever be done. Then all of a sudden, it popped up in the movie previews and hit the screens in December. I was at the first screening in my town and to say the least I was ecstatic at the movie they produced. They stuck very close to ALW's stage version (I have both sound tracks and it is hard to tell which I am listening to they are so close). The few story enhancements they added only served to clarify the parts of the story that were poorly depicted in the stage version. All were more than appropriate. The movie shows the time and care that ALW gave to producing his masterpiece - virtual perfection in every aspect. True Gerry Butler is not the singer that Michael Crawford is but neither is Crawford near the actor that Butler is (evidence - get a copy of Disney's Condor Man to see Crawford at his acting best!). Butler's performance is brilliant, magical. I can't imagine any other contemporary actor coming even close. Of course all the other cast members were perfect for their roles also. Incidentally, if I were the loser in the Christine lottery, I would have made a move on Meg! What a cutie!! Criticisms I have heard are bogus; the phantom was too young – Butler IS 35, Rossum IS 16 – how much age difference do they want? He is only 15 years away from membership in AARP; Butler can’t sing – I beg to differ and his rendition packs SO MUCH drama it blows away any Broadway ‘perfect’ voice; Rossum looked like a deer in headlights most of the time – So what’s the point? THAT IS THE WHOLE BASIS OF THE PLOT!!!!!!!; Plot lines are totally unbelievable like the sword fight ending in a draw, Phantom killing people and they can’t find him in a tiny theater, etc. So . . . they think the plot of Terminator, National Treasure, Indiana Jones movies hold together better do they?; Phantom’s disfigurement is nothing more than a bad sunburn – This is a MOVIE, not CNN or The Operation Channel – it is a dramatic interpretation for heaven’s sake!! The ONLY flaw in the movie was the TERRIBLE marketing program. It only hit half the screens that trash like the Folkers was on, was released in two stages so new theaters didn't pick it up on the second wave. A movie that should have swept the box office ticket sales and swept the Oscars didn't even make the roster. Sad. Hopefully DVD sales will rocket it to the top of the stack where it should reside. Pros: ALL

    Cons: NONE

This movie was fantastic. I don't care what the critics say. If you were privledged enough, as I was, to see the stage version by Andrew Lloyd Webber you will love this movie. They did his marvellous score justice and visually it was stunning.... There were some new things that couldn't be done on stage but it didn't take away from the original. Gerard Butler is a sexy, swooney Phantom and any hot blooded women would love him. That kind of takes away from the Phantom being a hideous gargoyle as he was originally intended in Gaston Leroux's novel. Although in this movie version his deformity is explained. His singing voice is less operatic than the rest of the cast, but is still fairly good. Emmy Rossum is a fair to good Christine. Her singing voice is a little too Disney cartoon character for my liking. But she does a good job. Patrick Wilson is a great Raoul. He has an amazing voice. He has a young Patrick Swayze quality that makes him easy to watch, and easy to root for. Minnie Driver plays a perfect Carlotta. The diva prima donna. A high pitched, almost screaming soprano makes you dislike her character even more.In closing, I say even if you don't like musicals, go for the special effects and eye candy. You'll leave with a good feeling. This movie had me on the edge of my seat, and holding off going to the bathroom in the middle of the movie. I can't wait for the DVD to see what special features are in store. You have to see this movie in the theatre, don't wait for it to come to home video. The big screen lets you appreciate Joel Shumacher's vision of 19th century Paris, and it's famed Opera House. Read more Less

    Pros: A fresh approach.

    Cons: Wasn't done years ago!

No, it doesn't have the amazing Sarah Brightmen and Michael Crawford as the leads--but let's face it, that ship has sailed. What the makers of this film had to do was take this legendary Broadway musical and transform it for film, and I belie...ve they were successful. Instead of casting singers, they cast actors that could sing. Although they didn't have the vocal chops of the Broadway performers, the actors did an exceptional job of telling this age-old tale full of romance and wonder. My initial reaction to Gerard Butler as the Phantom was disappointment in his voice. I doubted anyone could replace Crawford as the Phantom, but Butler found a way of reinventing the character. After only a few minutes, his sensuality and magnetism took me over. He "acted" rather that "sang" the songs, and I was completely won over. The music was exceptional, the scenery magnificent. Yes, for listening pleasure, the Broadway production is still superior. But the visually stunning sets and the power of the characters in the movie enthralled me. Bravo! Read more Less

Pros: Magnificent cast, great musicals, awesome story!

Cons: The ending was just not enough!

I have always seen "Phantom of the Opera" films that are a bit "outdated" for my taste, and I never got the story nor the point of the "phantom". This film explains the "why's" and the "how's"..., the "who's" and the "when's" and I actually appreciate the older versions even more because of this film. I have fallen in love with the music: it took my breath away and I felt as if I was there with them. I love the cast: Gerard, has proven to be hot and a great actor, and the new face and voice of the film-the female lead- was magnificent! I don't think anyone else could have played the Phantom the way Gerard did. It is an excellent film, captivating, romantic, thrilling, exciting, and dramatic! Read more Less

Pros: Your able to enjoy the sound of opera in your own home!

Cons: Your tv will not be big enough to capture the greatness of this Version of Phantom!

I've seen the live opera and have listened to music over and over. When I recieved my dvd, I just couldn't get enough of the Phantom of the Opera. The quality of the movie compared to the movie theatre was not a bit different other than my sp...eakers were not as loud as at the movie theatre. I just need to get surround sound. If you are looking for a positive rating for this movie to buy, you've read the right review! I am definitely a Phan of the Phantom of the Opera no matter what version or opera house it is played in. Cons: Minnie Driver

I loved the play and I loved this version of the movie. It was so close to the musical and I'm glad they kept the music the same as the original. Emmy Rossum played a great Christine. I will buy it as soon as it comes out!! :)

Loved every minute of it. It was better than seeing it on stage. Even my husband who despises opera with a passion enjoyed this movie.
