Pro Reviews: Amerika
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews On the Moodymann releases on his KDJ label, the Detroit artist Kenny Dixon Jr. manages to integrate an element of social critique into his funk and soul-influenced house music. While not every EP bears the artist's ideological stamp, some records such as Amerika send a clear message about Dixon's values and the message he tries to preach. Relative to the other Moodymann records from the late '90s, Amerika is rather generic in terms of music, though. The artist's patented amalgam of sampled percussion fashioned into a funky-as-can-be rhythm with some colorful vocal samples and some keyboards does the job here, resulting in yet another great nostalgically charged house record just as likely to appeal to fans of '70s funk as it will to modern househeads. But the record comes a little short on music relative to message. - Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide |
