Take "Idol" for what it is.....

Entertainment.Anyone who thinks this is actually a "competition" for the best voice is a little naive. Do you think Fox or anyone else would have put this show on TV if people didn't watch it? or if record companies did realize all the money they co...uld make from the winner? Take Kelly from season one....her record sold 285,000 copies in a weekend because of the show...someone (not Kelly) made a lot of money off of that. The reason the show takes a whole season is because the netwrok and record executives find the person that will be the most marketable, not the "best" one....regardless of what we say or vote. For various reasons, this show captures people's attention and then makes you watch...I THOUGHT I couldn't stand these types of shows, but i find myself watching to (a) see how ridiculous some of these people look and (b) watch someon elive out a dream. The album under review here is just a souvenier of the show. Nothing more, nothing less. It shouldn't be held as a original work of art, and we shouldn't expect it to be earth shattering stuff. It's a bunch of people like you and me (except with a good voice) covering a bunch of songs we've all heard before. It's decent sutff and fun to listen to, but it's just ear candy. This CD won't make you think, and you won't be earth-shattering, but you'll find yourself singing along and wondering if the person singing it knew they would be were they are now. I'm not saying it's right, but if you expect anything more than just another attempt to profit off of an overrated TV show, you'll be disappointed.Oh, and by the way, someone mentioned that John Mayer would get voted off of Idol early. In my humble opinion, John is twice the performer and 10 times the songwriter of any of these characters...plus he has the talent to play a musical instrument, not just use his voice. It's not his fault his songs are on the radio constantly. THese "idol-wanna-be's" only pray to have the kind of career he's had so far. Read more Less

    Ruben is the BOMB!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 22, 2003 | 2 out of 3 found this American Idol Season 2: All-Time Classic American Love Songs review helpful

Although I don't like some of the artists' voices on the current "Idol", I must say that Ruben has the best R&B-type voice that I have ever heard. I mean, he is right up there with Luther Vandross & Barry White! I will definitely pay money to buy h...is album once he WINS!!Also, what's with the dissing of the show? You know how hard it is to break into the music industry, ESPECIALLY if you don't have a particular image. I'm glad that these people have an opportunity to realize their dream & are given a stage to actually COMPETE to win. There are many singers out there these days that are horrible, but they make money because they come out half-naked! I would actually prefer to have people who can really sing!Example: That guy John Mayer was slamming the show recently, saying that "real artists" would never go on there! HELLO? Do you know how quickly he would've been voted off?? He wouldn't have lasted one day!! He certainly does not have a good voice & to write something cheezy like "your body is a wonderland"?? When I heard that song, I was on the verge of vomiting b/c it was so disgusting! Read more Less

Pro Reviews: American Idol Season 2: All-Time Classic American Love Songs

  • All Music Guide

Building on the hype and excitement from the debut season of the populist pop star search American Idol and its subsequent CDs, American Idol Season 2: All-Time Classic American Love Songs presents the first recordings from 11 of the 12 finalists -- unfortunately, firecracker Vanessa Olivares, the first finalist voted off, isn't featured here -- as well as two ensemble performances. As the title suggests, the collection features studio versions of the songs the finalists sang for the "All-American Love Songs" theme night, and despite the somewhat pedestrian arrangements of the songs, each finalist does manage to put their imprint on their song, for better or worse. A somewhat top-loaded album, the collection offers songs from the show's two strongest contenders after beginning with the pleasant but unspectacular version of "What the World Needs Now Is Love" that the finalists performed with Burt Bacharach. As usual, Ruben Stoddard sounds polished but emotive on his cover of "Superstar,..." while Clay Aiken, whose voice sounds a little thinner on this recording than it does on the show, turns in a smooth version of "On the Wings of Love." From there the collection almost has nowhere to go but downhill, which it does to greater and lesser degrees with songs like Julia Demato's "At Last." Her voice is pretty, but too thin and bland to take on the Etta James classic, and in retrospect it's pretty clear why she was voted off relatively early in the show; likewise, Charles Grigsby has a sweet, pure-sounding voice that isn't quite up to the task of mastering Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed." On the studio version of "Three Times a Lady," Joshua Gracin sounds richer and more controlled than on TV, but still not quite as distinctive as the show's best performers. This indistinct quality plagues several of the songs, including Trenyce's "Let's Stay Together" and Rickey Smith's "Back at One," which is unusual considering that both of these singers turned in some of the better performances on the show; on the other hand, some of the more uneven singers turn in some of the album's more assured tracks, such as Kimberly Caldwell's "Killing Me Softly With His Song" and Carmen Rasmusen's "How Do I Live (Without You)." Kimberley Locke's smoky, professional-sounding version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" predicts her likely bronze-medal finish on the show, but still doesn't reflect the amazing amount of growth she experienced as a singer and a performer after the track was recorded. The album closes with an ensemble rendition of "God Bless the U.S.A. (Proud to Be an American)," which is about as stiff as the album-opening performance, but also underscores the patriotic theme that has influenced American Idol's second season. Aside from collecting performances from most of the finalists for fans who were sorry to see their favorite go sooner than they would have liked, American Idol Season 2: All-Time Classic Love Songs also emphasizes the strengths and weaknesses in the talents of the show's best performers; while it remains to be seen if Ruben Stoddard, Clay Aiken, and Kimberley Locke have the versatility of last season's winner, Kelly Clarkson, or the charisma of Tamyra Gray and Justin Guarini, it will be interesting to see where they go from here. - Heather Phares, All Music Guide Read more Less
