Courtney Love is here to stay!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 15, 2004 | 2 out of 2 found this America's Sweetheart review helpful

    Pros: awesome screams, awesome singing...

    Cons: uh...NONE!! :)

I started listening to Courtney Love and her band Hole with 1994's "Live Through This." It had the defiant, I-won't-take-nonsense
-from-anyone, screaming banshee wails, with unpolished/raw guitars and melodies as a backdrop. Courtn...ey's lyrics, as well, helped pave the way for a new rock 'n' roll era. "Celebrity Skin" was a radical makeover. But now, after all the bad limelight that Courtney has suffered from then until this year, she came back with an even MORE brilliant album, deceptively titled "America's Sweetheart." Courtney Love has once again brilliantly brought back the raspy, crafted signature screaming voice she had when she was with Hole. She also has crafted much more masterpieces on this record than any other alt-rocker could EVER throw in your face!It was only fitting for Courtney to bring to fans (and even non-fans) the following lyrics in the first track (one of my favorites), 'Mono': 'Is this the part...where I gotta come and save the day/did you miss me/did you miss me?' Indeed, YES, COURTNEY LOVE WAS MISSED!! :) My other favorite part of the song is when she sings, 'Is this just a sad side show/can't make a hooker come...'My second favorite track on the album is the fourth one, 'Sunset Strip'. I love the chorus part where someone sings the "aah" as Courtney finishes said chorus. It is very reminiscent of the Hole song, 'Malibu'. Courtney brilliantly crescendoes her screaming voice as she finishes the third chorus until the final end of the song. This is what I call , TRUE rock 'n' roll that only Courtney could give to her true fans!! (like ME) :)Another favorite track of mine is 'I'll Do Anything'. From the start of the song it makes me want to dance. The best part on the song is after each of the two bridges, when the distorted guitar is blaring!Courtney once again rants and screams on the ninth track, 'Life Despite God'. But hey, this is Courtney we're talking about, right? Which is why it's so cool to hear that part of the song: 'What's that stain under your skin/can't wash it out/cuz I'll wash it in!' :)My final favorite track is the rip-off of you-know-who: 'Zeplin Song' (purposely spelled that way??) It's another rock-out danceable tune as 'I'll Do Anything' suggests, as Courtney complains about why Led Zeppelin plays on the radio and how sick of it she is (and rightfully so). So as the final guitar licks end the song, Courtney chants "SHUT UP!!" GO, COURTNEY!! :)Courtney finally ends with the ballad, 'Never Gonna Be The Same'. This is the ONLY track that she DOESN'T yell, but even THAT doesn't weaken the rest of the album one bit. Therefore, EVERY track deserves praise, but the favorites that I listed above are what you need to listen to the most.Have fun rocking out to Courtney Love!! :)Joshua DealyP.O. Pros: good lyrical cotent

    Cons: could do better vocally

Ive been a Courtney Love fan for years and have waited in anticipation for a long time for this cd.Keeping that in mind I have to admit that I was deeply disappointed by what I heard. The lyrical content most resembels early HOLE. Musically it sounds... like a mix between PRETTY ON THE INSIDE and CELEBRITY SKIN.Sadly though Courtney sounds as if shes partied too hard and has been into the drug scene again. Her voice is just too raw. Shes shown us all that on LIVE THROUGH THIS and CELEBRITY SKIN that shes talented and has a wonderful voice, wich she didnt showcase on this cd. Read more Less

Courtney loves solo album is very interesting......I mean it dosent sound exactly like her in a way, the music has gone over into modern punk and it dont suit her, maybes cos she had Brody dalle on two tracks but hey i still love t...his album. My favourite ones being "Mono","Un
cool" and "Hold on to me".If your a mega fan Buy it!!! and dont bother getting the Japenese imported one cos its only got one song extra (Fly)and you can get this on the "Mono" single.....but anyways its good cd.

    Courtney Love is back!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 27, 2004

Pros: Heavier than some Hole songs

Cons: Sounds a bit out dated

I've been a Hole fan for years. Despite people's negative thought towards Courtney Love, I really just focused on the potential that her former band had. Hole was a pretty good group, and although they only made three records from 1991 - 1998..., all of those records showed the multi - talentness of Courtney Love. From crazy girl, 1994's "Live Thought This" to glam rocker, 1998's "Celebrity Skin", Courtney showed that she had incredible talent. In 2004, six years after "Celebrity Skin", she returned from the dead with her solo debut "America's Sweetheart". First of all, let me say this. This album does not at all compare to "Celebrity Skin", or any other Hole records. When you listen to this record, you could tell that she just isn't putting in her full 100% effort. Sure, songs like "Mono", and "Hold on to me" are decent songs, but they just don't hold the same ammount of emotion of her Hole material. It almost seems that Courtney's past issues (suing Nirvana, getting involved in bitter lawsuites with Geffen, and getting into rehab) has got in the way of her recordings. It's as if her stress has burned out the passion and emotion inside of her.For anyone who loved Hole, such as myself, then this record is a godsend, but if you just want to stick to Courtney's best material, then stick with Hole. Even Eric doesn't like it

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 23, 2005 | 0 out of 1 found this America's Sweetheart review helpful

    Pros: catchy disposable pop-rock

Cons: bad singing/screaming, bad lyrics, crappy band...

Courtney was never a good singer and I liked her screaming 91-94 era. But now her screams barely have the same power and ferocity, her voice is painfully autotuned, and the ballads.....oh, the ballads! oh, my ears!! The lyrics are not only outdated (...as well as the riffs) but they're cringe-inducing. Even IF I could ignore the fact that Courtney is now 40 but writes as if she's still 16, I can't get over how busted up her voice (and face) is. Listen to LTT instead. Read more Less

    It's weak

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 19, 2004 | 0 out of 1 found this America's Sweetheart review helpful

    Pros: She has talent

    Cons: The talent is wasted

It's a shame, HOLE was an outstanding showcase of her talent, now she is just going through the motions. Americas Sweetheart sounds like a rehashed version of past works, only not nearly as creative or well done. Her voice is rough, the lyrics ar...e weak and the music is recycled. Read more Less

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 6, 2004 | 2 out of 11 found this America's Sweetheart review helpful

    Pros: way talented

    Cons: too vain

she's back... her last album was amazing! much more polished and less trashy then her debut LP. i still hate her for what she did to kurt, but i guess we all have to move on eventually. her talent is undeniable.
