With a penchant for British '60s pop as well as obtuse art rock psychedelia, the difficult to spell yet impossible to dismiss Gorky's Zygotic Mynci trawls through the torn out pages of music history to not so much attempt something new but possibly to simply try something interesting. Euros Childs puts on the affected vocals like a comic twin to Strangelove's Patrick Duff, and "Lucy's Hamper" is so close to the Brian Wilson warbling of Super Furry Animals that Gorky's might as well be a side project. It's songs like "Heart of Kentucky," however, that really stake out a piece of addle-minded, prospector real estate. Starting off as a drawling, exaggerated country duet and then peeling off its faces to play like a Sonic Youth concert shot by Andy Warhol, its shifty-eyed unpredictability is striking. Gorky's might still be a band who wears their influences on their sleeves, but these are definitely odd sleeves indeed.

Gorky's music followed unconventional time signatures and structures, as well as instrumentation (boasting everything from dr... Read more
