Pro Reviews: Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Prodigy's main man Liam Howlett said in an interview that usual band members Keith Flint and Maxim weren't on the new album because this was a back to the core record, one to find the soul of Prodigy (dancer Leeroy Thornhill left the band years ago losing your dancer, always crippling). For anyone rooting for the band, it sounded like a good deal. Howlett came off as a mad beat scientist of great genius on his goinitalone CD The Dirtchamber Sessions, Vol. 1, rockin the beats with mad style and blowing the dust off Babe Ruth's "The Mexican" just to prove how he was cooler than you. It was a sweet mix but then nothing, and then it got worse. Howlett himself disowned 2002's dull "Baby's Got a Temper" single so let's all go nuts for Prodigy again, sounds like we're on the right track. There's an inspired list of guest stars on the album Princess Superstar, Kool Keith, Liam Gallagher, Twista, Juliette Lewis and Howlett is working hard throughout, twiddling the knobs and making noises fly every which way. "Girls" is a good electro roller, the surprisingly different and slinky "Phoenix" is proof Howlett hasn't lost it, and you're bound to fall for at least one of the generic fist pumpers, they do have that whipping sting in the tail of which Howlett is the master. Unfortunately, Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned isn't the success 1997's Fat of the Land was. It's steps ahead of the "Baby's Got a Temper" single and worth it for the faithful but not up to the old standards. - David Jeffries, All Music Guide |

Pros: After 7 years, Prodigy returned with this CD.
Cons: It's surprisingly lackluster.
Back in 1997, Prodigy, fronted by Liam Howlett, were the darlings of electronica. Their "Fat of the Land" LP was a huge international smash, setting high expectations that were later shot down in 2002 when they released the woefully bland single "Baby's Got a Temper." It was a sign that Howlett's magic touch is disappearing, as evidenced on the long awaited and long delayed "Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned." It's not that Howlett has run out of interesting ideas; the problem is that very few of them are strong enough to sustain a full-length song. With the exception of three or four killer tracks, "Outgunned" is all bark and no bite. Ditching Keith Flint and Maxim, Howlett ropes in guest stars including Juliette Lewis, who appears on the revved up punker "Hot Ride." But her voice is so buried in the mix that she barely registers. "Get Up Get Off" and "Wake Up Call" are repetitive bores that wear out their welcome within just seconds, and "Action Radar" is just cringeworthy. But there are some highlights: "Memphis Bells" stands out thanks to its playfully sleazy groove; "Medusa's Path" is a dark and sinister six minute ride, and "The Way it Is" rides off the coattails of Michael Jackson's "Thriller." If the rest of "Outgunned" were as inspired as those three tracks, then you'd have one of the best records of the year. But three out of 13 songs don't justify a purchase. Considering that this record is the result of seven years' work, "Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned" is a disappointment. ...
