Pro Reviews: All I Want for Christmas Is a Real Good Tan
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews An entry for the 2003 Christmas season was a natural move for Kenny Chesney after the blockbuster No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problems made 2002 his banner year. But in typical Chesney fashion, his holiday album tries to be a little more easygoing than the usual Music City rehash of tried 'n' true yuletide chestnuts. The sunny south of the border vibe that lit up the video for No Shirt's title cut is alive and well on All I Want for Christmas Is a Real Good Tan; the album's own title track is a nice, swaying number that approximates the Cascades' "Rhythm of the Rain" into its breezy Buffett feel. Like Chesney's best material, it's a contemporary country number crossed effortlessly with pop, and it's just a little bit cheeky, too. "Don't worry baby," he sings. "We'll celebrate plenty/I'll buy you some shades and a brand new bikini." He seems truly honest when, in his liner notes, Chesney explains how as a kid he spent the season in his native east Tennessee, but now likes to head down to the Caribbean for the holidays. And he backs up that sentiment with the title track and a fun steel drum run through "Jingle Bells." However, the remainder of All I Want for Christmas leans more toward Nashville safe bets than easygoing St. Bart's. Fans likely won't mind; after all, Chesney's duets with Randy Owen (on the Alabama classic "Christmas in Dixie") and Willie Nelson ("Pretty Paper") are solid, and -- ever the softie -- he brings his mom and Aunt Sharon in for a touching take on "Silent Night." But filler like the needlessly electronicized "Silver Bells" or "The Angel at the Top of My Tree," which is basic pop-country dressed up in Christmas ribbons and bows, might have been replaced with more of the title track's temperate climes. Chesney and his pals sure look like they're having a great time in the back cover photo, lounging in the sun and sand with their Santa caps. But All I Want for Christmas Is a Real Good Tan could have spread the Coppertone around a little more, instead of relying on Nashville conventionalism. - Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide |

Pros: His wonderful voice...
Cons: none
Kenny's 2003 Christmas CD is a wonderful blend of old and new. The CD begins with a fantastic melodic little ditty penned by the multi talented Paul Overstreet, and has Kenny singing about his yearning for a tan on Christams instead of the cold and dreary weather. Track 2 has a little twist towards the end of what is normally a flat Christmas staple song. But his little island twist thrown in for good measure makes it a cute updated version of an old standard. Track 3 is another islandy feeling tune of yet another remade version of "I'll be home for Christmas". It would be just bland if not for Kenny's smooth lovely voice at the end wishing me a Merry Christmas! Number 4's remake is blessed with the masterful and enormous voice of Randy Owen of the original singers, Alabama. It's a testament to the wonderful blending of the old and new. "Thank God for Kids" is an Oak Ridge Boys retool but sounds new coming out of Kenny's mouth. "Silver Bells" while most of the time is a boring monotonous melody, comes alive and is revamped with Kenny's silky voice lending itself to it. Track 7 is a Kent Blazy and Skip Ewing collaboration that is an emotional song with a powerful message. Kenny's delivery is above reproach. It's no wonder that Kent and Skip are the top song writers with the most talent. Number 8 is a perfect example of what Kenny is capable of when he sits down with his mind on writing. Dean Dillon and Buddy Cannon are perfect co-writers and complete Kenny perfectly! "Pretty Paper" written by Willie Nelson is song number 9. Kenny is blessed with not only having it on this CD, but sining the song with the author of the song...Mr. Willie Nelson. The result is a stirring rendition that rivals the original recording of it. "Silent Night" while always a strong Christmas favorite of mine because of the message of my true Christmas meaning it sings of, is so well done and not over done that it is moving and quite beautiful. Kenny sings it the way it should be sung...slow...peaceful...and beautiful. The addition of the 'Grigsby Twins' at the end of the song is lovely. The last song on the disc is "O Little Town of Bethlehem". It is a fitting end to a wonderful Christmas disc. It is lovely and the original tune is carried throughout by Kenny and his strong and talented voice. He never falters and gives testament to Christmas and Jesus the way any good Christian man should. Kenny you made your grandma Grigsby proud! I loved the disc and recommend that you give it a listen as well.
