Earth Wind & Fire has always incorperated Brazillian musical elements into their music and even though they're musical always had a spiritual significance it all reached a new peak on 'All N' All'.The liner notes fall out to reveal sy...mbols of all major religions collected together, signifying (as Maurice White puts it)various implaments of one all emcompassing higher power. The lyrics themes of this album all have heavy mystical references. With it luch tropical funk sound "Serpentine Fire" starts out the album and then flows straight into "Fantasy",one of the bands finest songs ever. Then on to the direct groove of "Jupiter"-"
;Magic Mind" comes later in a similar vein."I'll Write A Song For You" presents Philip Bailey at the height of his vocal powers and emotional intencity.Maurice himself comes up with two impassioned ballads of his own with the pleasant "Love's Holiday" and "Be Ever Wonderful".But the centerpiece of this album is the elongated latin jazz instrumental "Runnin"-it features everyone in the band at the height of their instrumental powers.Musically speaking almost all the songs from 'All N' all' have a heavy Afro Latin/Brazillian jazz-funk-fusion flavor.Absent are the heavy pop orchestrations of recent EWF releases. This 1977 release is not only one in a long string of triumphs this band released during the second half of the 1970's but can also be observed as a pinnacle of modern music.

Pro Reviews: All 'N All

  • All Music Guide

Earth, Wind Fire's artistic and commercial winning streak continued with its ninth album, All 'N All, the diverse jewel that gave us major hits like "Serpentine Fire" and the dreamy "Fantasy." Whether the visionary soul men are tearing into the hardest of funk on "Jupiter" or the most sentimental of ballads on "I'll Write a Song for You" (which boasts one of Philip Bailey's many soaring, five-star performances), All 'N All was a highly rewarding addition to EWF's catalogue. Because EWF had such a clean-cut image and fared so well among pop audiences, some may have forgotten just how sweaty its funk could be. But "Jupiter" -- like "Mighty, Mighty," "Shining Star" and "Getaway" -- underscores the fact that EWF delivered some of the most intense and gutsy funk of the 1970s. The 1999 CD reissue adds three bonus tracks: "Would You Mind" (a demo version of "Love's Holiday"), the "original Hollywood mix" of "Runnin'," and a live version of "Brazilian Rhyme," recorded live in 1980. - Alex Hen...derson, All Music Guide Read more Less

Earth, Wind & Fire

Earth, Wind Fire was one of the most musically accomplished, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands of the '70s. Conceived by drummer, bandleader, songwriter, kalimba player, and occasional vocalist Maurice White, EWF's all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock roll, psych... Read more
