Grade:A, not as good as DIRT, but better than the others, especially "Grind", which is one of my favoriet songs from AIC.

    Underproduced,but still a good buy

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 2, 2001

If a person were to ask me why I didn't gave this album 5 stars when I am a huge fan of Alice I would probably tell them it's because while I like alot of the songs, even though it took more listens to get into them,to me,the album is not produced as ...good as Dirt,or Facelift, and some of the songs I find myself skipping over.Allow me to illustrate,Two reasons why it's not as good produced as Dirt or facelift,A-Dave Jerden(producer of Facelift and Dirt),is not the producer(Toby Wright is),nothing against Toby but it's all in the product if you listen to the first two albums produced by Jerden,I invite you to notice how Sean's snare drum sounds crisper when he hits it ,not flat, bass sounds fatter,Jerrys guitar crunches and is heavier, and Layne's screams are penetrating.that's because Dave Jerden knows that when you're recording, mikes have to be put at a certain calculated distance from the instrument depending on the instrument when recording in order to get and capture the most optimal sound from it.He's said he knows how to do this because of some book he read,it says you just use a little math. Now if you are skeptical about Dave Jerden's ability to do this better than I invite you to read Guitar Magazine when they interviewed Jerry in the June 2001 issue about his Dergradation trip album coming soon and get to the point where they ask him why jerry brought Jerden in initially as the producer of his second solo album and you'll see he says "we wanted somebody to open it up and and make sure the sounds were captured in the right manner".B-I read an article one time in some rock mag around the time when this album came out and in it,Jerry said they were tired of doing the same stuff and wanted to experiment soundwize,i.e.-Toby Wright.ALso it is known there is a bit of a riff between Jerden and Layne so that's another reason why Jerden's not producing this.Supposedly, also from what I've read countlessly, during the time when Jerden was producing Dirt,he complained a few times to Layne about showing up on time and told him to stop doing drugs because it was affecting his working ability, now I don't know if layne was doing drugs, nor do I care, none of my business, but apperently Layne didn't like being told what to do to the point where he's informed Jerden that he never wanted to work with him again and Jerden's been quoted as saying "I'm not here to be a bestfriend, just do a good job",so considering all these factors, they got toby Wright who wasn't as overbearing, reportedly an easy man to work with, but not as good a producer when it comes to "capturing the sound in aright manner" and it shows on this album. To me,these songs sound better live.Otherwize, some good songs make a worthy buy. Alice In Chains album review.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 9, 2001

Compared to DIRT or FACELIFT, it's still Alice In Chains. Not as grunge heavy as their previous albums, but nontheless still a talented band making heavy, melodic, powerful hard rock. Cantrell's lyrics and singing is amazing, and Staley still has tha...t killer voice down. "Grind" is one of the best AIC songs I have heard, as well as "Heaven Beside You". "Again", "Sluge Factory", and "God Am" are also really great. Nothing's changed here. Read more Less

RE: This is a true debut

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 8, 2001

Hey, just because it's a self titled album doesnt mean it's a debut album. Actually this is AIC's most recent album of new material, if you dont count the unreleased tracks from Best of The Box. Their debut was actually Facelift.P.S. this is a grea...t album and AIC rocks. Read more Less

    Great album.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 3, 2001

As of this writing this is the last Alice in Chains album of new material. When this record came out I didn't know it would be 6 years and counting since a brand new album would come out by AIC. Sure Nothing Safe gave us "Get Born Again" which is a... great song but I need more than that. I miss Layne's dark vocals and Jerry's wailing guitar. It's almost sad that since this album there's been this:Unplugged (1996)Nothing Safe: The Best of the Box (1999)Live (2000)Greatest Hits (2001)only 2 new songs since then. Killer is Me on Unplugged and Get Born Again on Nothing Safe. I might be wrong but possibly a third song on the Box Set called "Dead". Anyways a great album. Read more Less

    RE: Crappy album...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 16, 2001

What about "Grind", Sludge Factory", "God Am", "Frogs" and of course "Shame In You"???Yeah, this album isn't as good as Facelift or Dirt, BUT IT DOESN'T SUCK! It's a beautifully dark album and a credit to Alice's legendary song writing abilities. N...o real Alice In Chains fan would say that it's crappy. Read more Less
