Alexander The Great was a relentless conqueror who by the age of 32 had amassed the greatest empire the world had ever seen. Past and present collide to form the puzzle of the protagonist, a tapestry of triumphs and tragedies in which childhood memories and Alexander's rise to power unfold side by side with the later day expansion of his empire, its gradual decline and ultimate downfall. From his youth, fueled by dreams of glory and adventure, to his lonely and mysterious death as a ruler of a vast state, from the tumultuous relationship with his parents - a powerful king and a queen determined to put her child on the throne at any cost, including murder - to the rousing "band of brothers" bond with his closest companions and vast army, as they fought from the sun-scorched battlefields of the Persian Empire across the snow-peaked mountains of India, the film chronicles Alexander's journey to become a living legend. For as Virgil wrote, "Fortune favors the bold." And no king or emperor, either before or after, ever achieved such fortune, or indeed was so bold, as Alexander the Great.

    Soo much wasted potential!

    Pros: beautiful sets, locations, costumes, soundtrack,

    Cons: wasted the talent it had, poor direction

    I was quite disappointed with Oliver Stone's interpretation of this historical figure. I would have thought that the director of such brilliant films like JFK and Natural Born Killers would have known better then to just throw in flashbacks as a ...plot device. It broke up the fluidity of the movie. As for the homosexual overtones, they have been incredibly overexaggerated by reviewers and critics alike (just watch an episode of Queer As Folk to see what I mean). The rating is perfectly legitamite in this case. However, the approach of the relationship between Alexander and his male 'lover' is so coy as to be annoying. And as with the other characters who had a name (if they were lucky) but little to no known backstory the lover (Hephastion?) was delegated to background dressing in most of the movie, completely wasting Jared Leto's talent. Rent 'The Jacket' instead. MUCH better film! Read more Less

    Pros: Oliver Stone's commentary

    Cons: Colin Farral& scene sequence

    If you really want the fruit of this epic watch Oliver Stone's commentary in the special features. It is possibly better then the film. The directors dicision to jump forward then back in time made the movie somewhat hard to follow. Colin Farrel ...as Alexander was uninspiring...lacking in acting chops. On the other hand, Angelina Jolie was venomous as the devious, somewhat mad mother...sexy,motherly,sn
