Did this movie lose something in the translation? I imagine many of those who liked this movie based it on the name "Akira" and the picture of the bike on the original box.

Akira IS by far the best Anime that has ever been created. Story, characters, animation, background, sounds, music what else can I say? If you consider yourself an Anime fan and haven't seen this yet then you cannot call yourself a fan anymore until you do. This movie IS that important to a collection.

Oh please, don't make me laugh at that overly used, trite statement. "Akira" is considered the staple for any would-be otaku (or anime fan) to watch, along with Dragonball Z, but certainly there are better things out there. I wouldn't go so far as to trash it (like I am going to do to Ninja Scroll quite soon), but I'm not sitting here typing all caps and spelling words like "like" incoherently either. Akira is pretty much about this kid who is kind of the weakest link, and he's abducted by these mad scientists (or something, GOD DON'T SEND ME HATE MAIL FOR INACCURACIES) and has his inner psychic abilities realized, only to realize that, well, Neo-Tokyo's got to go. Not bad, and definitely some philosophic elements in there, but I can think of better. I wouldn't BUY it, but I'd recommend that virtually anyone watch it. BTW, if you saw those commercials on TV a few years ago, it does NOT make "Blade Runner look like Disney World," other than a few semi-gory scenes, it's not TERRIBLE on the violence scale, but I wouldn't call it "family viewing," either.

ahh, Akira. I should thank a guy that told me about this movie and said it was pretty cool, and that i should watch it. . . he was right. It is a pretty cool movie... Theme was good, great plot, and... Timeless. Oh yeah, back to it, thanks...dude. This movie is the coolest thing i've ever seen in anime. It is timeless, though. I'll probably be 30-something, and look back and say " that was a cool movie ..."
to my kids... yep, i'm going to corrupt my children with anime... well, it was cool, n e anyone who is thinking about watching it, should..but, be warned... it has violence and greusome stuff in it, and that's what makes it so damn cool... and Nakaeda's bike...gggrrrrrr....love that bike... okay...other than that, beforewarned also, never, NEVER watch this movie at 5 in the morning on New Year;s, because you will fall asleep and wake up a half an hour later, knowing you were watching a good movie, and ruin it and... end up watching it again, so it's all good...Was this review helpful? Don't even think of calling yourself an anime fan unless you've seen THIS! Akira is nothing short of the best animated movie ever created. The cel art is beautiful, detailed, and even puts modern-day CGI to shame. Some of the best voice-acting you'll ever hear; the characters are full of emotion. And above all, Akira stands as the most influential anime title. Ghost in the Shell, Neon Genesis Evangelion--these titles are superb and owe something to Akira. Although, you may not get into it the first time, Akira gets better with every view.

While the past 20 years or so of Hollywood has consisted of just about everyone churning out predicatble action movies and romantic comedies that elicit nothing more than a yawn or a polite chuckle, Director Katsuhiro Otomo made "Akira". Released in 1988, this film is still largely unknown to the masses. Brilliantly concieved, "Akira" is the kind of masterpiece I have longed to see. There may be small details to carp about, but this film was concieved on a large scale and Otomo's genius for the story of a young man affected with incredible psychic powers is a mind-expanding experience. This film benefits from one of the greatest soundtracks you'll ever hear, particularly the heart-pounding "Kaneda's Theme" which is played during some of the biker gang sequences and at the end of the film. There is also more genius in the soundtrack, since at some points, there is no soundtrack at all, in fact, silence is used, giving an even stronger effect to many of the most exciting scenes. There is an ethereal quality to "Akira", a feeling very hard to describe. For all of it's violence and sense of impending doom, there is a beauty to this film in it's presentation. The animation has a very 3-D quality which surpasses movies of today like "Toy Story" and so on in it's depth, scope and detail, especially since it was all hand-drawn instead of with today's homogenized computer animation churn-outs by Disney and Pixar. The Special Edition DVD of Akira is definitely the most significant DVD released yet, I believe. "Akira" is an extremely moving, powerful and compelling film. Otomo's direction is sheer genius and Hollywood seems like nothing but a burnt out dinosaur compared to what this Japanese director managed to create. THIS film could easily replace about 90% of the films on the AFI 100 films list. It's scope, vision and breadth encompass so much more in it's 2 hours and 4 minutes than a whole slew of hollywood garbage that's been produced in the last 20 years. If you can still manage to get the Special Edition DVD, get it. Filled to the brim with extras, "Akira" is a film worthy of such extras. Step aside Tom Hanks and Jack Nicholson. This is the kind of movie that would have me and many other people scrambling to the theatres to see if only our local theatres would show it!! AKIRA!! AKIRA!! AKIRA!!

This movie rocks, okay? I'm obbsessed with it, and it's very easy to get obbssesed over. It's a cult in itself. For everyone who says it's confusing, I can offer you the advise of getting the Japonese Subtiltled version 'cause that explains it a little better than the dubbed one. But the English has its advantages, too, like how the new voice of Tetsuo is Tai from Digimon so you get to hear him curse. ^_^ But personnaly I find the Japonese language absolutely beautiful, so... Whatever. AKIRA!!!!

AKIRA is the second greatist movie that ive seen to this day its plot is about a young boy named tetsuo who gets into a wreck and gets taken away by the army and gets alot of test's and other studies done to him. the army is looking for a geene called the AKIRA geene which is unimaginable power. I WILL TELL NO MORE.

this is one of the great anime movies. I loved it, this movie started my love for Japaness Animation. Its full of action and adventure, anyone who loves anime or just likes a good movie has to see this.

this was a great movie!! i'm into dbz, which in comparison to this is tame, so it was a pleasant change. i really really really really recommend this movie! it's bloody, though, so if you don't like it, then don't see it.

AKIRA!... Posibly the best anime movie I've ever seen. Akira is the movie that got me interested in anime to begin with. It is the real stuff, anime at its best. Nice action scenes, great music, and an intelegent story. This movie has been out for a while but is finaly getting the apreciation it deserves. Putting it on DVD is a great idea; I incourage people to see it

Akira was my favorite movie 4 years ago and now everyone is realizing that is it awesome. I would say that everyone who doesn't see this movie is dumb. If you like real anime you will love it. If you are into dbz or anything that is tame go away. This is the real deal. It is what anime is meant to be!

Five stars this is the best movie that I have ever seen period. If you are a fan of sci-fi or anime then you have to own this movie. From start to finish this movie will keep you glued to your seat and begging for more. if there ever was a classic anime, this would be it.

I recently watched AKIRA, and at first I thought it was a STUPID SCI-FI Anime, but IT ISNT!!!! Akira has an interesting plot, and YOU WILL NEVER BE BORED WATCHING IT.

This movie is one of the best movies you will ever see, anime or not. All those people that say it suck, well they're entitled to their own opinion, even if it is wrong :P You see, there's something about Akira that will captivate you and have you sitting there thinking the movie over in your head. I wanted to rush out to buy the Manga to find out how much the story differed in the much longer version of the story. I watched it again and again. And the animation, every time I watch it in never fails to impress. I loved this movie, and I'm betting 99 out of a 100 people would like it too, but there's always that 1 that's going to try and stop... Anyway, if you're not sure rent it first. And if you really love the movie hunt down the special edition tin. It's got TONS of extras.
