    Pros: great songs

    Cons: fillers

the stones started to really come into their own on this album with songs like "paint it black" and "under my thumb", true classics. still, there is some fillers here, but it's worth the try. "Mother's little helper&...quot; is in the UK version of this album. here, on the US version, u get "paint it black" Read more Less

    Their first Masterpeice!

    By Stephen  Dec 19, 2002

Up to this point the "Stones" had put out several decent albums with many excellent songs. But there was always a bit of a lull in the sequencing of the songs. "Aftermath", however, was the first album to truly satisfy from beginning to end. For me a...nyway!Also, they were so much more creative on this release than they had ever been before. "Paint it black" is (imho), the best "Stones" song ever!! By the way, I prefer the U.S. release, which does, in fact, contain "paint it black". The other (UK) version omits this song but does, however, contain "mothers little helper". So what are you to do? Answer: buy the U.S. "aftermath" and then get "flowers" which also contains Mothers little helper". Read more Less

The Rolling Stones finally delivered a set of all-original material with this LP, which also did much to define the group as the bad boys of rock 'n' roll with their sneering attitude toward the world in general and the female sex in particular. The borderline misogyny could get a bit juvenile in tunes like "Stupid Girl." But on the other hand the group began incorporating the influences of psychedelia and Dylan into their material with classics like "Paint It Black," an eerily insistent 1 hit graced by some of the best use of sitar (played by Brian Jones) on a rock record. Other classics included the jazzy "Under My Thumb", where Jones added exotic accents with his vibes, and the delicate Elizabethan ballad "Lady Jane", where dulcimer can be heard. Some of the material is fairly ho-hum, to be honest, as Jagger and Richards were still prone to inconsistent songwriting; "Goin' Home," a 11-minute blues jam, was remarkable more for its barrier-crashing length than its content. Look out fo...r an obscure gem, however, in the brooding, meditative "I Am Waiting."will hear the difference with SACD, even on a cheap stereo system without a high-end amplifier or speakers. And you won't just hear the difference, you'll be an instant convert and wish, hope and pray that other artists whose catalog hasn't been reissued since the early days of CD -- Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, especially the Beatles -- are given the same treatment in the very near future. SACD and DSD are that good.] - Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

The Rolling Stones

By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the selfconsciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had pioneered the gritty, harddriving bluesbased rock roll that came to defin... Read more
