    Pros: The Story Was Excellent

Cons: The Ending Wasn't That Good

The book After by Francine Prose is about a teenager named Tom. He has three friends Brian, Avery, and Silas. He lost his mom in a car wreck two years before. He lives with his dad in Massachusetts. He goes to Central High School. About fifty miles f...rom Tom’s school, there was a deadly shooting. This school was Pleasant Valley. It killed a bunch of people including teachers and students. Tom’s school Central gets all these new rules because of that one single school. They search their backpacks with metal detectors. People at his school are disappearing, most of which are his friends that are going to Operation Turnaround. Can Tom Handle the stress he has to face for most of his friends to leave him? I enjoyed the book throughout. I recommend that you read it. The only thing that I didn’t like about the book was the ending. Don’t let that stop you from getting the book though. I say the book is for ages 14-17 years of age. I hope you read this book and find out what happens after. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: After

  • Enhanced Muze Note

In her first novel for young adults, Prose succeeds in keeping suspense high and manages, for the most part, to connect shocking events to a reality familiar to most teens..This drama raises all-too-relevant questions about the fine line between safety as a means of protection versus encroachment on individual rights and free will. Sure to spur heated discussions.

  • Enhanced Muze Note

Because the narrative is kept faithfully inside the protagonist's mind, readers are skillfully left just as unsettled, frightened, and confused as he is himself, about both the future and the nature of what exactly is going on. Could have been scarier if the administrative power had snowballed rather than possessing total control from the beginning, but still an unsettling piece for modern times.

Publisher Notes: After

  • School has become a prison.
    No one knows why.
There's no way to stop it.
