    b-sides with the quality of a-sides

    the aeroplane flies high is a box set that contains the five singles of the sp-masterpiece mellon collie and the infinite sadness. on every single you find several b-side-songs, which in fact could have been on the mellon collie album themselves, as ...they're absolutely high-quality songs. these b-side-songs are a kaleidoscope of excellent melancholic rock songs. you can find the heavy and depressive rock sound of the siamese dream era in songs like marquis in spades and mouths of babes (both excellent, made according to billy corgan during the siamese dream tour), but also bitter sweet songs of a divine beauty like medellia of the grey skies or pennies. there are also a couple of cover songs. among them one of the best cover songs i've ever heard, the cure's "a night like this", interpreted by james iha, who emphasizes the beautiful melodies of the song and combines them with a deep warm sadness.all in all you could have made an entire high-quality-album out of these songs. it's not just for the pumpkins-fan, as every friend of music would enjoy the beauty and variety of this collection of songs.     this tiny little beautiful box changed my life.In dark-adore hours I heard of i´ts existence, I bought it and was amazed find to songs so beautiful they made me cry!!u don´t have it buy it.

    absoulutly great. a great collection of smashing pumpkins' songs, and the little book that comes inside has a message from billy that is just genius. a very nice collection of smashing pumpkins' songs.

    an incredible compilation of singles and bsides that could have easily been fit together into another double disc album. some great covers as well as some hard hitters (the aeroplane, god, marquis of spades, et al) and some softer gems (said sadly, ...the boy, blank, et al). a must for all pumpkins fans Read more Less

    The Aeroplane Flies High is one of thegreatest boxed set ever released becauseof it's beautifully done packaging and five awesome singles, jam packed with b-sides. But, are the b-sides good enough?Some of it yeah. We all know that b-sides are known ...for being "leftovers" because it's either not good or it's sounds a lot different for that song to fit the band's new album. Like apples being compared to a banana, You know what i mean. Billy Corgan, of course, has a different style for making b-sides by making it more special compared to the ones in the album.So people tend to buy there singles. The five discs of the boxed set has it's own sounds which makes it a listening trip while waiting for your mom to go home. If you like a hard knockin' distorto guitar sound, pop the Zero disc. If you love acoustic numbers, try listening to the Tonight, Tonight disc. And if you love to hear this guys play a bunch of cover songs, just stick that Bullet With Butterfly Wings disc to your younger sister's cheap component. But I recommend the 1979 disc. All in all, this box set is fairly good and it's a great addition to anyone outhere who collects SP stuffs.I don't recommend this for SP starters because you might regret that you've bought an expensive box-set that is not pleasant to your ears.     Strength, not Length

    "Aeroplane" has many excellent rock songs. It also has beautiful ditties recorded at the bare minimum. Only the Bullet single falters- the covers range from mediocre to awful. the "1979" single is the best- Ugly, the boy, Cherry, Believe, and Set th...e Ray to Jerry flow together nicely and are refreshing. The "Zero" single rocks, and rocks well save for "Marquis in Spades." For all of these good songs, however, the album as a whole is too much for its own good. Going the "Pisces Iscariot" route would have been smarter- there are only so many b-sides one can tolerate in one listening. Read more Less

    This boxed set has some songs that are just as good as the songs on Mellon Collie, but in a different way. Not all of them are good, but most of them are. Some highlights: "God," "You're All I've Got Tonight," and "Pastichio Medley."
