Pro Reviews: Adventures in Stereo

  • All Music Guide

The first Adventures in Stereo album (not to be confused with another, similarly-packaged self-titled set on the Underground Sounds label) collects the early EPs which won the group a cult following on both sides of the Atlantic. Drawing in equal parts from Phil Spector's girl-group masterpieces and Stereolab's cut-and-paste Moog symphonies, AIS constructs minimalist pop gems, charming miniatures assembled from remnants of long-forgotten records from the collection of sampler extraordinaire Simon Dine; highlights like "Underground Sound," "Summer High" and "Airline," frosted with the gauzy vocals of Judith Boyle, are lost in time between the AM radio of the 1960s and the experimental music of the 1990s.
