Hollywood native Laura Elise "Brix" Smith became a member of British post-punkers the Fall when she married bandleader Mark E. Smith; in 1985, she formed a side project called the Adult Net to more fully indulge the pop sensibilities she brought to the Fall. The Adult Net's lineup at the time of their live debut included ex-Smiths Craig Gannon (guitar, also ex-Aztec Camera), Andy Rourke (bass), and Mike Joyce (drums). In contrast to the Fall's edgy art-punk, the Adult Net's repertoire drew from the California surf-pop, psychedelia, and country-rock of Smith's childhood. While the group recorded an album in 1987 for Beggars Banquet, it went unreleased; their first official release came in 1989 with the Take Me EP, which featured a cover of the Strawberry Alarm Clock's "Incense and Peppermints" and three originals. By the time the group returned later that year with the full-length The Honey Tangle, ex-The The bassist James Eller and former Blondie drummer Clem Burke had assumed the rhythm section duties. Shortly after the release of the album, Smith's marriage dissolved, and she left the Fall; the Adult Net was dropped from their label late the following year.
