Pros: double doors are convenient

Cons: repair man three times in four years

I had a perfectly good refrigerator for over 30 years but remodeled and wanted something new. Got the freezer on the bottom with the double doors on the top. 14 months after I bought it, had to get the freezer door replaced. 2.5 years later had to replace the compressor because the freezer was not working. Don't know if the refrigerator was affected or not because the freezer comparment was not cold. After having the unit for four years and coming home after being on vacation for a week, no cold and even heat coming out of the refrigerator. The lights still work but all the food was ruined and it smells. I've heard from three other Amana owners who have had to replace Amanas after five years or less. I will not buy an Amana again. Wrote to Amana but have not heard from them.

Temp Controls Failed - Amana 800 Number No Help

Pros: Size, Design

Cons: Amana Repair Center - Temp Controls Not Reliable

The controls on our 4 year old Amana stopped working and the food ruined.
The refrigerator and freezer section stopped cooling and the inside
temperature reached 60 degrees by the time we found out refrigerator
had stopped working.

There was no power failure of any kind! Not even for a second!

The refrigerator was on, the lights all worked, the LED display was not
showing numbers. The display instead showed just a dash on each temperature setting.
Also, trying to change the settings did not work. The controls did nothing.
The displays both kept showing a dash. The compressor pump was not coming on.


We lost lots of food.

I unplugged the refrigerator and plugged it back in. The refrigerator
then showed numbers, the pump started, and the controls worked
again. It's like I rebooted the refrigerator's computer. The refrigerator
got cold again, The freezer was back to working.

BUT, is my refrigerator reliable?

I have scheduled a visit from the Amana repair center. We'll see what they have to say.

I called the Amana 800 number Friday night and scheduled a repair visit through them
for Saturday morning. On Saturday morning I got a call from the local repair person;
they do not work on Saturday. That's just great! NOT!!

Shelf hinge in door broken after just 4 months

Pros: spacious storage

Cons: broken shelf hinge, cheaply made

I believe appliances in general are getting more and more cheaply made without sufficient testing. This refrigerator, the AFD2535DEW, is an example of this. The inside of the doors that hold the shelves are made out of Styrofoam! Yes, the same material that you used to pour your coffee in and crush it into the garbage. This Styrofoam is used to hold up the shelves that hold your milk cartons, your glass bottled juices and salad dressing which usually weight a good 10-20lbs on each shelf. Could Amana of picked a stronger design? Do not trust these styrofoam hinges. They will break over time. Amana's technician came to look at the damange today and said this is this 3rd time he had seen this problem with the fridge.

I cannot return this refrigerator. My grandfather bought it for his house and obviously followed whatever the salesperson had told him to buy.

Best thing to do is to pay careful attention to the design of each fridge. Do an intense reseach on line.

The fridge does have a 1 year warranty. Sears wants another $550 to warranty it for another 5 years, which is 1/3 the costs of the fridge!

Anyways you get my point. Be careful what you buy out there. This $1500 I feel is a mistake.
